there’s a reason they get along well, tsunayoshi and himself, and it’s not just because of the self deprecation they mutually tend toward. even if it is a not insignificant trait that they do share.
but as they sit side by side on the crumbled rooftop of someone’s house, remnants of the apocalypse painting a landscape of devastation spread out before them, yoichi thinks that maybe the thing that draws them together is their tendency to draw disasters to themselves.
what tsuna said — honestly, it was hard to refute. blaming the bad guy only goes so far when the bad guy wants to rule the world and doesn’t care how he gets there. it’s a nice thought: you’re not at fault, byakuran caused this, and so on and so forth, but that’s all it is. a nice thought, a fleeting dream. nothing changes.
nothing changes in this future either — rather, this potential future, according to the briefing they received upon arrival. there are ruins that stand desolate and unmoving, and secret bases deep underground where even the millefiore’s eyes cannot see, but on the surface, there is wind and dust and nothing else moves. the stillness is almost a relief, when movement is more likely to mean enemy. that particular point is a lesson they’re both still learning.
but in this moment, learning can wait. yoichi swings his legs over the edge of the roof, tilts his head heavenward.
“that’s okay,” he basks in the moment of peace while it lasts, each sliver as transient as their dreams, and slips his hand in tsuna’s, “we’re all here for you. we’ll fix this, this ruined future, and we’ll go back, and — and then we’ll take each day as it comes, and it won’t be your fault anymore, because this future won’t have been anymore.”
underneath it all, the reason they get along is because neither of them are willing to let the other fall on their own. if tsuna is holding onto the figurative ledge with one hand, yoichi is reaching out for him.
yoichi holds fast despite the risk of being dragged along, knowing tsunayoshi would do the same. (and if they fell, at least they’d have company.)
