In spring of 1989, residents learned about the Passaic Valley Sewage Commission’s plan to build the world’s largest sludge incinerator in Ironbound. ICATW was joined by many residents of Ironbound and Essex County in fighting this proposal. A number of protests were held, and people attended and spoke at PVSC commissioners meetings. In fall of 1989, a protest was held in conjunction with Greenpeace, the international environmental justice organization. Greenpeace brought 2 dump trucks full of clean sludge and dumped it onto land outside PVSC’s gate. Then ICATW members and residents planted flowers in the clean sludge, to demonstrate the beneficial ways to use composted sludge (rather than burned sludge). Arnold Cohen from ICATW and a number of residents who planted flowers were arrested. (They were released at day’s end, and later the charges against them were dropped). The Greenpeace boat was also docked in Newark Bay during this time, and some residents took a tour of the boat. This incinerator was stopped by ICATW’s actions.
