ICC participated in many citywide struggles for a better city. Among, those efforts was improving recreational opportunities for young people. On December 20, 1982 East and South Ward residents held a Candlelight Vigil on the steps of City Hall protesting no pool in Ironbound and bad conditions at JFK pool. Members of the CTSR included: Newark Swim Team, Vailsburg Block Association Council, Committee to Open Wilson Ave. Pool, Silver-Stuyvesant Block Association (Vailsburg), Ironbound Ecumenical Association, Coalition of South Ward Block Assoc., JFK Center Advisory Committee, Vailsburg Community Council, Friends of Weequahic Park, and the Committee for Boylan St. Recreation (Vailsburg).
