Who is Iceman Thesis?
So, I was checking some of my metal news today, and MetalHammer got a package from Iceman Thesis. I had never heard of the band, and apparently, up until Download Festival, neither had anybody else. Or something, I'm not really sure. Iceman Thesis played Download and blew all sorts of minds, but a lot of people had this big question. Who is Iceman Thesis? The question was resounding because everybody on stage was wearing a mask. Maybe it was a supergroup founded by some of metal's biggest musicians, maybe nobody would recognize the people underneath the masks, but the curiosity is there.
So MetalHammer got a package from Iceman Thesis. There was a note, there was some artwork, and there was a flash drive. The flash drive held this video which goes on to explain a few things.
The members of Iceman Thesis are upset with how mainstream music is obsessed with appearances first, and the music last. The members are anonymous, and they intend to keep it that way. They exist to only be Iceman Thesis, never the parts of the sum.
Furthermore, they're pretty good. After the messages, there's a music video. It's not my usual fare of tech metal or prog, but it's very good nonetheless.
But here's the thing. While they are claiming to protest against the obsession of a musician's identity in order to promote obsession with the music, all they have done is ignite wild speculation to the identities of the musicians. A google search for Iceman Thesis doesn't provide links to their music. Instead, the first few links are "Who is Iceman Thesis?" Scrolling down further provides links to videos of their set at Download, and one video ripped off of a VHS that they threw into the audience, which is just the same music video they gave MetalHammer.
The whole execution is elaborate and effective. People are obsessed with Iceman Thesis, and it's possible that, as quickly as they've come, they've gone as well. The video given to MetalHammer states that "Iceman Thesis is dead! Long live Iceman Thesis!"
I think we'll see more from the band. All that I'm going to ask for is that we respect the wishes of Iceman Thesis, and appreciate their music, no matter who made it. It's what they would have wanted.
