Headcanon: How Buccaneer lost his arm
Buccaneer doesn't usually talk about it, and when people do find out, he generally brushes it off, but he lost his arm when he was only twenty-three years old, about two weeks after (then) First Lieutenant Olivier Mira Armstrong was assigned to Briggs. He was a Second Lieutenant at the time, and his team was ambushed by Drachmans during a mission that most would consider suicidal, though the General at the time, Rhodes, thought it prudent.
He and his team were taken hostage, and as he seemed the hardiest, the Drachmans chose him to keep alive, as they tortured him for information while simultaneously sending out a ransom note to Briggs Fortress. General Rhodes chose to ignore it, partially due to the fact that they'd be risking the lives of a squad for a single man, partially because he didn't think a 'Xingese half-breed mutt' was worth the effort of a rescue attempt.
Olivier, having been the one to deliver the message, chose to mount her own rescue mission, and snuck out of the fortress perhaps a week or so after Buccaneer had been captured.
When she got there, Buccaneer had already gotten free of his bonds and was in the process of breaking himself out. They dispatched the rest of the Drachmans, and then made their way out.
They traveled for hours, only coming to a stop when they reached an only abandoned shack, which was when Olivier realized that the blood that soaked his uniform was not that of those they left dead, but his own, an they were injuries that weren't substained in the escape.
She helped bandage him up, they talked and drank, and then...
The next morning, almost right before they were about to cross into Amestris, they were ambushed by a Drachman border patrol. Olivier with her sword and Buccaneer with his 'borrowed' Drachman guns were easily able to dispatch the twenty men, or so they thought.
They didn't see the last guy.
Olivier was distracted, and Buccaneer...
He owed her a life debt. Honor was very important in Xing, it was very important to him...
So he did what needed done.
The hidden Drachman's sword came down and Buccaneer's arm went up as he moved in front of her, and then...
He was numb and the snow was stained red with blood.
