“Thank you for joining us, ladies and gentlemen, as we celebrate the graduating class of TOPGUN ‘86,” Viper starts, looking over the assembled crowd fondly. There’s a twinkle in his eye as he meets Maverick’s gaze briefly. “Before we get started, I’d like to take a moment to thank our special guest for the afternoon. Admiral Kazansky, do you have a few words?”
Maverick feels Goose stiffen beside him half a second before his own eyes make contact with the Commander of the Pacific Fleet. He feels the blood drain from his face, the smattering of applause from the gathered crowd fading to a dull roar in his ears. It takes all of his remaining brainpower to clap his hands together mechanically, totally numb. Because it’s Tom.
Nonsensically, as the Admiral steps up to the podium, the first thing that Maverick notices is that he’s wearing his wedding ring. The second thing he notices, is that Tom’s looking at him, too. And, of course, he recognizes him. There’s a brief flash of panic in his gaze before he’s turning a wide, disarming smile on the group at large - his reaction to Maverick disappearing under a veneer of civility and professionalism in an instant. Mav’s immensely grateful for it.
He has to admit, though, that Tom looks fucking incredible in uniform. Something about the crisp, sharp lines of his dress whites make him look even taller, his shoulders broader and his waist even slimmer. For just a moment Mav lets himself imagine getting down on his knees for him just like that, peeling away the thick material to get to where Tom would be hard and wanting, before he has to snap himself out of it. He can’t afford those kinds of thoughts in the presence of half the officers currently stationed in San Diego.
When he snaps back to reality, he listens half-heartedly as the Admiral says a few words of wisdom or encouragement or… something. Maverick doesn’t really catch a word of it. He thinks there may have been a mention of the man’s own time in TOPGUN years ago, but he can’t be sure. He’s a little too busy trying to figure out how he didn’t recognize a four-star Admiral in the flesh the night before. There had to be have been something to clue him in when the man took him home, right? Tom’s portrait is hanging in every Naval building this side of the Rocky Mountains. Before he can put all the pieces back together, though, Viper is stepping back up to the podium.
