As eyes are tuned to the Olympic feats in South Korea, we call your attention 100 miles west of Pyeongchang, to the city of Icheon, the center of South Korean ceramic manufacturing, and the source for artist Jean Shin’s LIRR #MTAArts project, “Celadon Remnants” (2008), at the Broadway Station in Flushing, Queens. Shin created large-scale mosaic murals featuring the shapes and silhouettes of traditional Korean pottery forms out of thousands of hand-selected celadon fragments donated by the city of Icheon. Celadon wares are among the most widely admired of Korean ceramics. If a vessel is imperfect, it becomes scrap and joins the mountains of fragments in the Icheon region. Shin was determined to use these cast-off fragments, and the artwork serves as a metaphor for the history, culture, and identity of the Asian population in Queens.
