so i finally watched early warning and... im not shook? im not enraged? i’m just kind of like “welp that was an interesting episode at times”.
get to see a presumably latina meta-teen (Lorena Marquez, perhaps?)
Artemis and Tara bonding moment over shared trauma
Zatanna’s (not) in the house
the violet & harper scene just felt randomly tossed in with no build up at all narratively, poorly executed, but not totally episode/series ruining for me. the writers were lazy in a way that justifiably hurt fans.
if i had to write a self-destructive scene for those two, it wouldn’t have started at the beach. it’d be a school scene first, then the beach.
At lunch, Violet would be thinking about taking off their hijab in an attempt to distance themselves from Gabrielle, sitting with Fred and Tara and Harper while Fred carried the conversation (haven’t heard enough from him in a few eps). Harper would have been taking sips from a nondescript water bottle and making faces as though it tasted bad (alcohol). They’d lock eyes, and know something was up. That’s why they go to the beach.
the alcohol filled water bottle gets tossed between harper’s hands as she talks about her stupid dad; maybe he’s homophobic. maybe he’s a drunk. probably both. violet would take off the hijab and say that they don’t feel like this is them anymore. Harper would offer a drink. Violet would take it.
they’d get to the point of being belligerent, someone’d report them, and that’s when Bethany finds them and drags them home.
BUT instead of violet/harper drama, i would have rather seen a scene of Joan’s funeral, considering i think she deserves it. would have been a good flash fam moment and we’d see how wally’s parents are lookin these days
additionally, would have enjoyed more of Zatanna v. Klarion action since the gal just used Fate’s magic. also: where’s fate? we just saw him in the first half of s3. where’d he go? what’d i miss?
All in all, i can see why the fandom got up in arms, but i’m just not sure it was warranted to the degree i’ve seen
