American Muslims: Changing the narrative
At a time when Islamophobic rhetoric is at a significant high, it is critical to break through the bounds of false narratives by capturing our own narratives, by lifting the true (and majority) voices of Islam, to combat the hatred with truth, knowledge, and mercy. The theme for this year's Muslim American Society conference is "Mercy to Mankind" -- with the most (internationally) well-known and most respected figures of the Islamic faith including Tariq Ramadan, Omar Suleiman, Suhaib Webb, Yasmin Mogahed, Zahra Biloo, and Dalia Fahmy. In hopes that everyone (Muslim and non-Muslim) could attend or at least be exposed to this Islam, my Islam: [the Islam that esteems knowledge and academia, in which the first word that was revealed of the Quran was "read" the Islam in which we begin every action with "in the name of God the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful"].. I will be live-tweeting the key points from the lectures I attend because I have the incredible privilege of being able to attend and learn from this conference. @dinaerifai, follow me on Twitter (or don't, my tweets are public) "To absorb without use is the gravest error of privilege" - Audre Lorde #MASICNA2015
