I’ve been reading your writing for a good few years now and have been thoroughly enjoying it both as a reader and-as an aspiring writer- from a technical perspective. I’ve also found your commentary on the ‘stickier’ aspect of fandom and characterisation-IDfic and the perceived morality etc- very illuminating. I wanted to share with you that you’ve encouraged me to ask harder questions of the characters in my writing, if that makes sense- and the work feels that much richer for it. So, thank you
Thank you so much anon!
And yeah sometimes it can be very satisfying (and challenging) to ask harder questions of your characters. I like the thorniness/crunchiness of the kind of id fic that I write, but I also like subverting some of the typical id fic tropes (i.e. so in Game Theory you have a characters who start out sexually assaulting each other, but then they actually call it rape, and then they actually deal with it, so it's like, id fic, but also, it doesn't always take some tropes for granted, I guess).
At any rate, as someone who comes from a media studies / media analysis university background, I am a huge fan of how we explore the dark layers of our psyche, and our character's psyches, in fiction, and how that can be helpful and transformative, and ultimately become one of the core features of fandom for some people itself.
But anyway! I'm not going to pen an essay (for once) I just wanted to say thank you so much for sending this, and I'm so glad you're enjoying the writing! :D I wish you all the good words / good writing flow while you're in the word mines!
