I have FINALLY managed to do a Draw This In Your Style-challenge! ✨ @heathermahlerart’s semi-self portrait inspired me to do one of my own. A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I really enjoy the moody sort of dusk colourway I found for this one. The mint, teal, purple and lavender are simply gorgeous together on that dusty pink background. They make my heart sing! I planned this post long before I realized it was gonna be scheduled on Midsummer’s Eve! How crazy is that? Today we in Sweden celebrate the longest night of the year, and protect ourselves by wearing flower crowns as the veil between this world and the next is the thinnest. Did you know that that large “B” looking symbol on the left is an ancient Norse rune? It’s been called Bjarka, Berkana, Beorc and Biarkan and it is simply pronounced “b”, (or “p” or “mb” depending on context). The Bjarka rune stands for birch or birch branch, femininity, fertility and childbirth. It is also connected to the goddesses Frigg and Freja. It’s been discussed that the shape of the rune represents two female breasts, or a pregnant body from the side. Hi, it’s me!⁠ (Again)⁠ .⁠ I had a lot of fun following along in @samrodriguezart’s @domestika class, our workflows are very different from one another and I definitely learnt some new techniques doing this. With that said however, it was almost even more inspiring watching someone share their skill, style and work process so freely. If you look at his art, putting abstract, flat shapes and lettering on top of realistic portraits is his jam; yet he generously shared the whole process from start to finish in his “Creative portrait illustration with Procreate” class. What is your favourite art era? . . Sometimes I fantasize about living in Paris during the shift between 19th and 20th Century; the height of the Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau era. Art Nouveau and specifically the Czech master Alphonsé Mucha influence me in almost everything I create (I even have a tattoo inspired by him on my right arm!). Did you know that he was one of the first Graphic Designers? Before Mucha, advertising meant black and white, copperplate and a lack of creativity (if you were advertising shoes there was an image of a shoe). . This self portrait is a direct homage to Mucha, however, I might probably redo it someday as I’m not 100% satisfied with the result... I almost like the sketch more than the finished portrait. .
