I wanted to whump Idalis a liddle bit and now there’s a whole alternate timeline in which Razolf (Ainsel’s “owner”) wins and takes Idalis and Cassio captive, hjelp.

CW: captivity, dubcon, torture, fake betrayal

(Is a bullet point summary, not prose :P)

They are brought before Razolf

Cassio snaps to the conclusion his best chance to ever get Idalis out of there is to play turncoat, so he does

Rumours of Cassio sleeping with Idalis as a career move are as old as rumours of Cassio sleeping with Idalis, so to the cynical asshole in the room Cassio now coming on to him makes perfect sense, plus Cassio is handsome and Razolf’s a gross man twice their age so no complaints on his part, AND it’s a good way to humiliate Idalis

So Razolf takes Cassio as a boytoy from which position Cassio has to worm his way into his trust while hating every minute of it :)

Meanwhile Idalis is taken down to the dungeons to be broken, which is totally Necessary For National Security and not just Razolf being a piece of shit (as with Ainsel), wdym

Idalis though never for a moment loses faith in Cassio. Sometimes it’s hard because Razolf loves to taunt him about how Cassio clearly loves a king and what a fool he’s been to think he loves him as a person, but Idalis clings on (and keeps score of his torture so he can exact revenge when the time comes)

Inbetween his sessions with Razolf the guards have been given leave to do with this invading enemy king as they please :) He’s having a great time

On the occasions he does find himself alone in his cell though, he discovers it’s opposite Ainsel’s cell. In this timeline Ainsel has actually been used against his army, but that doesn’t stop him from talking to them and trying to befriend them

(At one point, Idalis, starved and beaten down, is forced to serve at a feast while Cassio attends as the king’s concubine)

The longer it goes on the more certain Cassio is that Idalis fell for his ruse as much as Razolf did and hates him as a traitor - maybe even if he didn’t at first, he must have lost faith by now. Much angst very cry

Finally Cassio has risen in the king’s favour enough he can just. Walk into the dungeon and retrieve Idalis without anyone asking too many questions. He does this fully expecting Idalis to hate him and ready to explain, but Idalis, bloody and beaten, just smiles at him and asks if it’s time to go

There’s no time to cry about it. Idalis insists on taking Ainsel with them and they escape into the wilderness

Something something recovery

Something something snatching back their soldiers who were forced into Razolf’s service

They get Razolf’s ass after all. I know this because Idalis gets to taunt him back “Who’s the fool now”

You know, he would never describe himself that way. He is Good and RighteousTM and I am Wrong.

Mostly it's just regular king stuff, like sentencing people to death or corporeal punishment and such. He always does it with an air of righteous anger, but sometimes he does enjoy the power trip - even especially when, deep down, he knows he's not being that righteous at all. Especially when he feels disrespected, he can overreact quickly and pretend he didn't.

On a more emotional level, he can be dismissive of others' suffering, especially if it's something he imagines "wouldn't bother" him that much. But, as with Ainsel, he'll never act that way around people he genuinely cares about.
