I don't want to hear about how pansexuality is a redundant label and shouldn't be used bc of how it overlaps with bisexuality, until we also compare and pick a "winner" who's still allowed to exist from:
gay (woman) vs lesbian
gay vs homosexual*
sapphic vs wlw / achillean vs mlm
nonbinary vs genderqueer
FTM vs trans man vs AFAB man / MTF vs trans woman vs AMAB woman
transgender vs transexual*
gay vs queer**
agender vs neutrois
genderfluid vs bigender
But we generally don't do that, bc different labels have different intricacies, and different meaning to the ppl who use them. And we especially don't think it's acceptable to go up to someone who identifies as nonbinary and tell them "well, genderqueer is older and its Basically The Same, Right? so you can't call yourself nonbinary, that's erasing my genderqueerness".
And some of those words are synonyms with different culture or history, and some of them are different identities that share experiences, but the argument you're making ("if two labels have definitions that are too similar on the surface, or experiences that broadly overlap, then they can't coexist") applies to all of them.
So as a bi person, I don't fucking want to hear it. If you're targeting pansexuals for existing under a flag that feels like home to them, then you better follow your argument to its natural conclusion and evict the rest of us as well.
* there's a lot of discourse about how "homosexual" and "transexual" have negative history in the US and ppl are discouraged to use these words, but you can't ignore the fact that lots of older people, and ppl from other countries with different LGBTQ+ history, still can and do identify with either/both of those labels. So if you actually wanna go up to those people and tell them they can't use those words bc of your (a complete stranger's) discomfort, then you can kindly go fuck yourself.
** not everyone who's queer is gay, but everyone who's gay can choose to use queer in addition or instead. And sadly whether people are allowed to use queer is a source of frequent discourse, but it fucking shouldn't be. If someone introduces himself as a queer man, you better fucking respect that.
