Misconception: He transforms into this noble knight just for Lily.
SEND ME A MISCONCEPTION ANDI’LL RANT TO YOU ABOUT IT ;;
HA HA HA.
No.
He literally doesn’t. He doesn’t change as per se, he just grows the fuck up. He realizes the world doesn’t revolve around him and that there are things that matter MORE than the stupid un-tidiness of his hair or his crooked smiles and that he did AWFUL, HORRIBLE things to people who did not deserved it and he matured. It’s called character development and literally every single person, fictional or not, goes through it.
He had always been a good person, and here’s proof;
exhibit a)
Befriending the misfits.
Sure, a small part of him did it because he thought he was cool and that it was cool to hang out with those who weren’t as cool but he really, truly, in a pure way, loved his friends. He was an ass to them sometimes (aren’t we all? I call my best friends bitches and I tell them they have egg shaped heads and they tell me I have crooked fingers and that I am an ass and it’s fine) but he loved his friends with all his heart. Sirius said they all would have died for Peter, that includes James who, lest be honest, would have been the first to jump in front of a killing curse to protect his friends. Remus says; “I think you are like James, who would have regarded it as the HEIGHT OF DISHONOUR to mistrust his friends.” Like seriously, this kid would have probably turned himself in to the dementors if he ever thought his friends had betrayed him, because he THOUGHT they would never do such thing. He was loyal and noble and he had a big heart. Do not even dare to deny that.
exhibit b)
Turning into an illegal animagus for his werewolf friend.
It just adds to what I said in the previous point, though, and I’d like to add that NO ONE forced him to this. He did it because he didn’t want his friend to be all alone, suffering like that. He didn’t judge (even RONALD MOTHERFUCKING WEASLEY says; “Get away from me, werewolf.” when he finds out Remus is one) or anything. Instead he found a book on transfiguration and helped his friend.
exhibit c)
Allowing his 'disgrace’ of a friend to stay at his house.
If he had not been truly a good person he could have been like ‘go away, I only talk to you at school to keep up appearances’.
exhibit d)
“Hey Remus, I heard you lost your job, that fucking sucks I will slap those people. Do you need any help? Don’t ever hesitate to ask for money man, I promise it doesn’t matter at all, you can take all you want. Please, I insist.”
Like basically helping his friends ALWAYS.
And now here’s the part where y’all say. “But they were HIS friends. He never helped anyone who wasn’t a friend.”
Need I remind you he joined the Order of the Phoenix WILLINGLY to help THOUSANDS of people who weren’t his friends and who probably didn’t even KNEW he existed?
And please let’s go with the fact that LILY had a good judgement. Good enough to allowe her to see the good in Severus and good enough to allow her to walk away from their friendship when she thought it was best for HER. Because she did it for herself, so if that girl put a ring on it (and I want to make clear that I thoroughly despise the idea that their characters are co-dependent from each other and their personalities and development are solely based on their romance, I am just pointing this out so people can understand) then that means he was good. And she wouldn’t have gone out with him if she didn’t think he was changing just for her. She wouldn’t have gone with him if she thought he didn’t change because he wanted to but rather because he was in desperate need of a good shag. So take this misconception away from me because I despise it.
