I didn’t mean to say I love you

I’m sorry, I have no idea what this is lol

It hadn’t always been like this.

It hadn’t always felt like a flame scorching my lungs, a blistering hand dragging itself up my chest and wrapping its vengeful fingers around my throat.

It wasn’t what I had I imagined late at night when thinking of David’s hands around my neck.

This instead was ugly.

Permanent.

A mistake that couldn’t be undone.

And when I feel that burning ache creeping to the surface, I remember his face. His dark eyes clouding over, suddenly the hollowness of his eyes becoming more apparent than before. I felt as if I was burning, but he looked like he was drowning.

I didn’t mean to say you didn’t know what you wanted.

You didn’t mean to say I love you

Right?

You once told me I was the strongest person you knew. I didn’t feel very strong when I walked into that bedroom and saw her pale skin entwined beneath your body, her lips parted with desire and need. I needed you in a different way. But you didn’t know that because I lied to you and so I couldn’t be angry when you caught her mouth with your own and sank down into her body, laid amongst the dishevelled sheets, scrunched between her fingers.

Do you love her now?

Because I told you no?

I didn’t tell you no David. I was scared. I said I didn’t want to loose what we had, I didn’t want things to change, if they change they’ll end. I never said no David, don’t you remember?

What I would give to take it back.

Did it feel good when I came to you that day? Begged you to forgive me, I couldn’t take the silence anymore. In trying to save what we had, I’d ruined what we had, because you couldn’t bare to look at me anymore. Even when I held your face so you would meet my eyes, see the wells of liquid forming, falling down my cheeks, you were looking at me but not seeing me. You’d never see me again because the girl you loved had gone. She disappeared when she looked you in the eyes and told you no, no she didn’t love you.

Even when I kissed you, pressed my lips against your own, couldn’t you feel the desperation in my fingertips grasped against your cheeks? I would have inhaled you right then and there if I could. I know this would be the last time I would touch you. The last time I would feel your hair weaved through my fingers, the last time I could feel your hot breath against my own. For a moment, I felt you move your lips and your thumb grazed my jaw. I could almost feel the temptation buzzing against your skin, the temptation to believe me, to trust me, to have me.

You’ll always have me, my love.
