Return of the Condor Heroes 83

Three decades and many versions later - this remains the embodiment of Louis Cha's vision. I've watched almost all the versions, and plan to feature them in this Dramas of Yore series, but when I think of the impishly cocky and vulnerable Yang Guo - it's Andy Lau's face that comes to the forefront. He had a softly sizzling chemistry with his co-star Idy Chan, who held her own as the icy cool maiden from the tombs.

i'm very sad to announce, i've officially given up on SSSS... 

HUH!! why???

as an anniversary series, and as the series that was said to have set Tavia up for her big award last year (and won her the award eventually), i had very high hopes for SSSS... somehow, my hopes were dashed...

don't get me wrong... the cast did a very good job, but if i could type this post and have SSSS playing at the background and still not miss out much, now that just screams one thing: SLOW PLOT DEVELOPMENT

actually, what was SSSS's plot anyway? i've watched individual interviews by Damian and Kenneth where they commented that SSSS is very different from our usual family dramas... by that i think they meant HOG and MR where every episode was a heart stopper... and they are right... the storyline of SSSS was something that was really difficult to follow purely because there was no main storyline anyway... no one was fighting for inheritance or dying from any illnesses... rather, the only storylines i could grab onto were that this rich man had 4 wives who each had problems, and his rich son loves a poor girl who has another lover... which i got to admit, wasn't extremely captivating for me... 

perhaps the only pull factor SSSS had was its cast power, which lasted while it did... Damian is the most amazing veteran in this show... i actually stopped typing when he had that slapping scene with Vincent! so intense! and that's Damian's strength, building up relationships with his co-stars such that intense scenes had amazing effects...

our other veterans, Mary Hon and Idy Chan, were efficient in their roles as Damian's 1st and 2nd wives... Idy's sidetrack "affair" with Ben Wong was a little awkward to watch... no TVB, the white sideburns do not increase Ben's age exponentially... 3rd wife Elena delivered probably the most amazing performance after Damian... extremely strong character personality which Elena managed to pull off successfully... but how successful a woman like her could raise 2 kids when she herself pretty much acts like one? a mystery...

Tavia's character was rather interesting to watch before she married into the family... after that, i could sense the scriptwriters were trying (really hard) to keep her as the first lead... which, lets just face it, is hard when you have so many other people you're trying to give screen time to... but Tavia was still lead material and you could see that she could hold her name beside bigger names like Damian...

Kenneth seems a bit lost in this series... Kenneth is one of my favorite actors but it seems like his only role here is to love a woman that doesn't love him (and later on i guess to overturn some law against polygamy... but i never reached that)... in terms of acting, i like how he led Rebecca, his "wife", and i like their little "friendship", especially when Ron "revived"... you could see Kenneth really loving and respecting her... oh Ron... i was so irritated... but you got to admit, he made quite a cute "little kid"... Rebecca, a talent not to be messed... sure her cantonese was way off at times but at least she wasn't unbearable... was she the best Siu Yau? i can safely say: No... but did she at least convince me? YES... 

Vincent is another talent we should watch out for... he was good... just look at the scenes he asks for forgiveness and slaps himself... oh my, my heart broke... Sire and Adrian were just an odd couple for me to watch... that said i think Sire (or JJ Jia for that matter), have yet to entered my book of artistes-who-i-know-and-watch-out-for...

yeah... enough of my ramblings... SSSS' cast was good, but its need for my lengthy investment of time and concentration made it hard for me to continue with it... hopefully one day i'll have the strength to pick this up again... until then...

Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles Episode 10 Thoughts

Ye Lan (Idy Chan) finally confronts Arthur (Damien Lau) about the affair between him and Chi-Kwan (Tavia Yeung). The typical female response would be that Ye Lan would oppose between this affair, similar to his other wives. Instead of opposing this, Ye Lan suggests to Arthur that he and Chi-Kwan should be together. She believes that she's not worthy enough to give Arthur complete happiness. A woman like Chi-Kwan who really loves Arthur may give him the happiness that he desires from Ye Lan.

Through this heart-to-heart conversation, Arthur makes another point. If Ye Lan says this, does that mean that she doesn't love him as much? Personally, Arthur may be right. Ye Lan may love Arthur just as his other wives, but she feels guilty. Her first true love Chai Yat Fai (Ben Wong) has been lingering in her heart for twenty-four years. She constantly reminisces those teenage moments, and she regrets how she mistreated Yat Fai. Honestly, I do support Ye Lan x Yat Fai because even though so many years passed, they do somehow love each other. But I still think the tension between Ye Lan and Arthur makes this "soap opera" more interesting.

Arthur vows to Chi-Kwan that he will not love another woman. Let's see how this plays out when JJ comes out.
