A day in the life of a veterinarian

If Not For This
Tuesday
9:42pm
I’m exhausted. And there’s three lines on hold waiting for me to get back to them and give each of them my full, undivided attention along with my most sincere empathy and unwavering patience. So, so much patience. It’s not just those three people who desire this from me. From the second I step foot into the clinic, I am not only requested, but expected to be almost abhorrently kind, unequivocally focussed, and above all - inhumanly patient. So much patience is demanded from me, and yet others have none to offer me. In return for my never-ending exercises in self control, I receive accusations of ill will, negligence, and greed; I have my morality and passion questioned and doubted; I have my livelihood threatened. Not from everyone, of course, but I can only take so much. I have been a veterinarian for almost 28 years now, and I can only take so much. Now, to tell line two their dog has cancer. Guess who should’ve diagnosed it sooner?
10:17pm
Lacy’s IV line keeps occluding - a word meaning blocked, which I should clarify, as I have been told by clients it is medical jargon and thus condescending to use in conversation. It’s frustrating to everyone because the IV machine begins beeping incessantly until someone figures out why it’s clogged. It’s tough working with animals, you know. You can’t tell them not to chew on the very thing that is sustaining their life, but my team is amazing and they have been keeping up with Lacy’s occlusions very well all day. I’m worried about Lacy. She’s 16, which is very old for her breed, and she might have eaten a little too much chocolate this evening. I know her owner is very worried. So far, besides the constant line occlusions, she’s pretty stable.
10:42pm
Fuck. 18 minutes before the clinic closes, and Lacy just entered another epileptic episode, but this time, it’s lasting a little longer. The phenobarbital that worked 3 hours ago isn’t doing much now, and I don’t want to accept the probable truth that the toxicity has reached Lacy’s central nervous system. I have to call her owner. I didn’t even eat lunch today.
11:15pm
Her seizure had dissipated a bit, only to return again. I couldn’t let it go on any longer. Fortunately, her owner made it to the clinic in time and is now able to spend Lacy’s last few moments with her, during which I sedated Lacy to ease her discomfort and pain. I stand with her owner, an elderly woman, in the examination room embracing each other while she weeps into my shoulder. I can barely even notice the warm, wet tears soaking up my scrubs. In this moment, the only thing that matters is that Lacy’s owner is experiencing this moment in whatever way feels right to her. I am simply here to make it a reality. After a few minutes, she turns to me and tells me she’s ready, but she can’t bear to watch. She pays the bill and walks out the door. I call in one of my assistants to act as a witness while I draw up a generous amount of euthanyl and promptly put an end to Lacy’s life.
Wednesday
12:34pm
I’m exhausted. I barely got enough sleep last night, and haven’t had a chance to even consider lunch yet. While working on my records, one of my assistants knocks on the door and hands me a card. Inside, a simple inscription: “Thank you for everything you’ve done for me and Lacy. I am forever grateful to you. - Agnes” I smile, not because she is grateful, but because I am reminded of why I choose to be a veterinarian every single day - because I feel immense reward from helping others and their beloved animals. If not for this, I would have quit many years ago. I’m exhausted. If not for this, I may have ended my life.

Can some Reign fans please stop using the show as any kind of reflection on the historical people.
Seriously. It has to stop. I’ve seen several people on twitter today say that Mary Stuart had it so much harder than Elizabeth Tudor and so much had happened to Mary during her childhood, yet she soldiers on. Whereas, Elizabeth is spoiled and got everything she wanted on a plate. Stop. That’s ridiculous. Nothing could be further from the truth. Elizabeth had lost her mother in the most violent of ways, been disinherited and neglected by her father, had been sexually abused by her step father, interrogated in a treason case due to his abuse of her when Seymour was eventually executed. She had been arrested locked in the tower by her sister and avoided execution by the narrowest margins. She had played the game tremendously and overcome seemingly insurmountable odds to become Queen of England. Once she was Queen, she never forgot these experiences and was always acutely aware of the fragility of power ad how hard you had to work to keep it - particularly with the affection of her people. There are few other monarchs who had to fight harder than Elizabeth. She was handed nothing.
Mary had been Queen since she was 6 days old. She had a lovely and well protected childhood/early life in France. She would always remember it as the best period of her life. She was very well looked after and given everything she desired. No sexual assault, no real political intrigue or huge life or death decisions ( her family took care of that for her). No horrible mother (Marie de Guise was a damn good mother, who worked tirelessly for her daughter). None of it. She couldn't have been more cared for in her position.
It honestly baffles me why this show chose Mary’s time in France as a base at all. If they wanted the teenage years of a famous Queen, that included sexual assault, horror, near death experience and a lot of misery. Elizabeth was right there, no bullshit required. It’s actually offensive that they would insert that into what was the best times of Mary’s life, but, not get into so much of what made Elizabeth who she was.
Enjoy Reign if you like, but, do not use it as any kind of indication of the historical people. Because all Reign has in common to them is the names. The events, personalties and situations/relationships have nothing in common.
