The sound of silence sounds a lot like ringing
The house was quiet. Way too quiet for Brittany's liking. Her mom was off at work, which Brittany had no complaints about. She knew they needed the money. Tubbs was off sulking somewhere. He seemed mad at her for some reason, and Brittany didn't know why. And Santana... well, Santana wasn't there.
Being alone forced her into a deep train of thought. Thinking was the only thing that made being alone less lonely, even more so than dancing. Laying with her head off of her bed, Brittany craned her neck and stared at the envelope that had her name on it. She knew it was from Santana. She wasn't going to open it though; she wasn't ready to. All day, Brittany tried avoiding her girlfriend (were they even that anymore?) and stuck by Rachel. And while Rachel made the day a bit more bearable, Brittany still had all of this hurt inside.
Brittany rolled onto her stomach and moved more onto the center of the bed, changing her position so that her head was in her pillows and her feet were at the end of the bed. She wasn't used to having this much room to move around. She tried to push away the thoughts of how much she wanted to be snuggled up next to Santana right now, but it was hard when she had nothing else to comfort her.
She reached her hand out to her nightstand and wrapped her fingers around two rings. One of them was the promise ring that Santana had given her in January. Brittany was always afraid to wear it. Afraid that if it got ruined, it meant that the relationship would too. Guess she didn't have to worry about that now. The other one was much simpler, and was made of plastic. It was the ring that Santana had given her when they got married, twelve years ago.
Brittany rocked herself back and forth on one of the swings as she twisted the chains in her hands. The boys were teasing her again and she didn't like it. When she thought all hope was lost, she heard a familiar voice. "Santana!" she beamed. If anyone could make her feel better it would be her best friend.
"Hey B," the other girl said. "Whacha doin?"
"Sitting on the swing, you?"
"Lookin' at you sitting on the swing."
"So you wanna play something, Tana?" Brittany asked. Santana was always good with playing with her.
"Yeah, sure B. But I gotta do somethin first." She reached out her hand for Brittany to grab.
Brittany looked at her curiously but grabbed onto her hand and stood up, trusting Santana completely. She let her lead her to under the slide, where they stopped.
"Uh, Santana? Why are we under the slide?"
Santana put a hand in her pocket and kicked a bit of dirt nervously. "I, uh. Member how we was talking about weddings and stuff? And how you wanted a pretty ring and have someone that cared bout you a lot give you one?
"Well um..." Santana's fingers clasped around the ring in her pocket. She slowly pulled her hand out and opened it palm up. "Marry me?"
Brittany saw the ring and her eyes went wide. Then she shyly bit her lip and leaned in closer to Santana. "You're supposed to put it on my finger."
"Of course it is, Santana." Brittany replied with a smile.
Santana slid the ring on Brittany's finger and then leaned in for a kiss.
"Uh San? What are you doing?"
"Well why're you doing that?"
"Aren't we supposed to?" Santana was getting impatient.
Santana let out a huff. She didn't know it was this complicated.
Seeing Santana's frustration, Brittany said," I'll be right back, kay?" She scurried out from under the slide and went over to where she knew she saw flowers growing. She picked a few flowers and went back to under the slide. Brittany took one of the flowers and put one in her hair. Then she gave the rest to Santana to hold like it was a bouquet.
"Okay, San. So now we hafta hold hands and promise each other stuff and then we'll be married. And you have to say like, I and then your name. Uh. I'll go first I guess. I, Brittany, promise to always share my toys with you, let you be the princess sometimes because you're really pretty..." She paused and gave Santana a small smile. "Give you hugs and cuddles whenever you're sad or cry, cause I'll want you to feel better and I'll always be your bestest friend forever."
Santana smiled. "My turn? So uh, I, Santana, promise to always beat up the boys that tease you and pull your hair. I'll scare away all those bad monsters that try to hurt you. I'll hold you on those nights when we have sleepovers and you get nightmares, till you feel better. And B? I'll always be there for you, no matter what." She looked at Brittany, hoping she did a decent job.
Brittany smiled and wrapped Santana in a tight hug, then pecked her on the lips.
"Kay we're married now. Let's go play."
Santana just stood there stunned before coming back to Earth and darted out from under the slide to go and chase Brittany.
Brittany sighed and put the rings back on her nightstand. She took one of Santana's pillows and held it close to her face, letting its scent carry her off into sleep.
