I have, of late, been questioning the power and capacity of #media to produce and progress positive change in the world. I am not a famous actor or showman of any sort and doubt very much that I would want to be. What I have strived for, however, throughout my lifetime and my work with media and the arts is simply to inspire and motivate positive growth in people through exposure to truths and fresh perspectives. The social media revolution has literally brought me to my knees on more occasions than I could have ever imagined. Throughout the years, though, my confidence in the ability of media to relate and share the most essential shared truths of human experience in order to ignite positive change and growth in individuals and society had wavered very little until only just recently it fell off a cliff and hit rock bottom. Once I had verbalized and vocalized this feeling to the universe, however, I almost immediately started to see and hear and participate in forms media that were powerfully reaffirming of my waning faith; discussions, productions, programs, and posts over various mediums that were not afraid of the light, but instead boldly and bravely stepped into it and our collective wellspring of power: our shared story of humanity. Today was another one of those days where my job afforded me another reaffirming media experience. I got to work on #Oprah Winfrey’s town hall style conversation with leaders from across the black community in a 2 part series called “Where Do We Go From Here?” which will be simulcast across all of #DiscoveryInc’s wide range of networks. The topic and theme of the show is no mystery, yet while Ms. Winfrey has dedicated her life to producing such content, even she herself noted that “This feels different”. Today, I am proud and honored to have been even a small part of the chain of professionals that produced and will be delivering this show to many millions of eyes, ears, hearts, hearths, and minds across the globe. Today my faith in my craft and occupation has been reaffirmed.
