If You Don’t | Commentary

If You Don’t is my debut release as SHN. It couples with I Won’t Go, which is the Mandarin version of If You Don’t.

Inspiration

If You Don’t came about while I was reading Exodus 33. Moses was supposed to lead the Israelites out of slavery and into the promised land that is “flowing with milk and honey”. And the Israelites were a stiff-necked, stubborn, hard-headed people. They were ungrateful and complained incessantly, even turning away from God and worshiping idols that they made with their own hands.

So there came a point where God told Moses to go and lead the people into the promised land but that God’d Presence would not go with them because He’s so angry with the Israelites, He might just kill them all along the way.

Moses responded by saying, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?” 

- see Exodus 33:15-16.

And that resonated with me as I began my career in music. God has led me thus far and I know there will be many opportunities that will come by as I set out. And those opportunities might also be flowing with milk and honey, promises of good things, rich things.  But I wrote this song as a declaration of sorts that I won’t go if God doesn’t go, regardless of the milk and honey.

This is the only song scheduled to be in the upcoming album (yes!) that will be bilingual, which then made it perfect to debut SHN with this song as a bilingual artist.

I’m more intrigued that God planned for this song to come out first because it means so much to start my career with this declaration.
