⁣ Canon Powershot SX730 HS ⁣ Taken on 08/12/2019.⁣ ⁣ Set among open pastures and gentle slopes, pastures and villages, grassy expanses and a range of peaks, the mountain hamlet of Scopa marks the beginning of the upper part of the Valsesia valley; in Italian: 'la Val Grande del Sesia' or simply 'Alta Valsesia'.⁣ ⁣ The landscape here is quite varied and picturesque. While Scopa has become more built-up over the years owing to the ski slopes and trekking routes nearby, ancient wooden houses and old churches can still be found.⁣ ⁣ The parish church dedicated to San Bartolomeo, for example, houses fascinating centuries-old frescoes. This may not come as a surprise when you realise that this was the first parish church to be built in the Alta Valsesia and is still affectionately called 'the mother of all parish churches'.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ Take a Regional train from Milan or Turin to Vercelli, and then catch the nr. 50 bus to Scopa with 'ATAP'. ⁣ Samsung Galaxy Note 10+⁣ Taken on 18/01/2020.⁣ ⁣ Here's a photo of Rovasenda Castle taken earlier this year in January.⁣ ⁣ As I attempted to capture in this picture, the castle is beautifully perched on a gentle hill dominating the skyline in the famous flatlands that are so common in the Vercelli province.⁣ ⁣ I remember visiting Biella and the Sanctuary of Oropa that day, which I thought was enough for a daytrip. So to think that a split-second decision to visit Rovasenda led to an absolutely unforgettable sunset seems unreal. ⁣ Samsung Galaxy Note 10+⁣ Taken on 08/03/2020.⁣ ⁣ Vercelli is a pretty little city in the Piedmont region that is rich in museums, monuments and beautiful historical buildings.⁣ ⁣ Located in the plain of the Po on the River Sesia, Vercelli is surrounded by magnificent landscapes of rice fields, for which it is known as 'the rice city'.⁣ ⁣ There was so much for me to take in during my trip to Vercelli — just a day before draconian lockdown measures had been put in place.⁣ ⁣ Knowing I'd have to start getting used to staying at home, I made sure to take my time observing the fine architecture in Piazza Cavour – one of the prettiest squares in Italy – bordered by colourful medieval arches and dominated by a terrific tower called "la Torre dell'Angelo" ("the Tower of the Angel"). With its medieval silhouette, the tower has rightly become of the symbols of the city.⁣ ⁣ Several other fascinating monuments can be easily reached from the square on foot. The most impressive for me were the Cathedral of Sant'Eusebio flanked by its 12th-Century bell tower and where several burials of the House of Savoy are housed, a beautiful Moorish-style 19th-Century Synagogue that is a symbol of Jewish presence in Vercelli, and the Basilica of Saint Andrew that was built in Italian Gothic style in just nine years in the 13th Century.⁣ ⁣ There are so many other monuments that are worth visiting, but those three are the ones that stood out from the rest in my view.⁣ ⁣ Vercelli is best reached by train on the Milano Centrale–Torino Porta Nuova regional line. If you fancy exploring the surrounding rice fields, there are quite a few bus services run by 'ATAP'. In northeastern Piedmont lies the province of Vercelli, a province with a very varied countryside, from the summits of the Monte Rosa Massif and the gentle slopes of the vineyard hills in Gattinara, to the vast plains and the famous rice paddies — one of Europe's leading rice producers. Around the flatlands in this province you can find remarkable castles – some privately owned, others open to the public – and quiet medieval towns and villages. One that's easy to get to by train on the Milan–Turin regional line is Santhià. This is a striking photo of the 'Casa Turrita' ('Towered House') standing in an open courtyard; it also goes by the name of 'Torre di Teodolinda' ('Tower of Teodolinda'). It was built in the 14th century and was used by 'la Corte ducale di Savoia' ('the Savoy Court') that moved to Santhià during a plague epidemic (!) which started Turin in 1630. Fortunately, that epidemic didn't reach Santhià and, as such, hosted 'la sede della Zecca e del Senato Sabaudo' ('the Mint and Savoy Senate'). Santhià is quite a small town, so I'd also recommend visiting other medieval towns nearby like and Chivasso (on the same Milan–Turin line), then Trino and Crescentino (on the Chivasso–Alessandria) that also rich in artistic and religious remains. Samsung Galaxy S6 Taken on 07/12/2019. Given how popular my photo of Alagna Valsesia was, here's a snapshot of an alpine hamlet in the same valley — this time taken in winter. Campertogno really captured the Christmas spirit when I was there. The locals proudly showed off the 'Presepe' ('Nativity') handmade in natural wood, which took a communal effort to make. It was a warm and decorative design that fitted so well with the Christmas atmosphere. This, for me, demonstrated how art and tradition worked well together — and all the while, the majestic mountains stood there against the sky enjoying the warmth and rays from the sun. But Campertogno is worth visiting even outside the winter season. As you can make out in this photo, there's a small Roman bridge linking one side of the riverbank to another. From that bridge you get a great view of the river Sesia running down the valley from the snowcapped mountains. And if you chance upon a clear sunny day like I did, it makes for a stunning backdrop! Then, on the right is a grandiose church with an art museum designed by the architect Filippo Juvarra, an Italian architect who was behind important masterworks in and around Turin such as designing the façade of the 'Palazzo Madama' and the basilica church of Superga. He must have had a fond attachment to Campertogno and admired its natural beauty in the same way that I have. You can reach this quiet alpine village by bus with 'ATAP' on the Vercelli–Alagna bus route, Monday to Saturday. Samsung Galaxy S6 Taken on 01/06/2019. Sitting on the foot of the southern side of the mountain massif Monte Rosa – the second highest mountain in Europe – is Alagna Valsesia. It is the last town you come to in Valsesia, which is a gorgeous valley to explore, and is a popular destination for winter and summer for skiing and mountaineering respectively. Moreover, Alagna Valsesia is home to old wooden huts and houses dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. They're named after the 'Walser', a German-speaking population who inhabited the Alps of Switzerland and the fringes of Italy and Austria. The houses they left behind are incredibly well preserved and people still live in them today. I found them delightful to look at and even more delightful to experience thanks to the information displayed in the 'Walser Museum'. Here's a photo I took of a group of Walser houses in Alagna in June last year — a great time of year to visit as it's when the weather is much warmer in Italy, the days are longer and you get that lovely fresh mountain air. If you want to delve back into the past like I did, there are buses leaving from Vercelli Monday to Saturday with the bus company ATAP'.
