NESTFLEERS 21.2 2025- Nacht van de Academies, Herentals

Nestfleers, a collaboration with Ignace Cami, is a participatory ongoing project based on fictional folklore.

We invited students from the Academy of Herentals to imagine mythical creatures, the ‘Nestfleers’, through collective imagination. These beings embody the urge of young animals to leave the nest. At the end of the workshop, the participants became the Nestfleers using costumes and masks.

𝘕𝘌𝘚𝘛𝘝𝘓𝘐𝘌𝘋𝘌𝘙𝘚, a collaboration between Bart Van Dijck and Ignace Cami, is a participatory project based on fictional folklore. The artists invite groups of people to imagine mythical creatures, the 'Nestvlieders' , through collective imagination. These hybrid creatures embody the urge of young animals to leave the nest.

NESTVLIEDERS

project in collaboration with Ignace Cami

Nestvlieders is a collaborative project in which visual artist Ignace Cami and me research the shaping of myths around the fictional figures of the Nestvlieders. “Nestvlieders” is the dutch word for Nestflüchter (German), Nidifugous (English) or Nidifuge (French).

This biological term describes organisms, mostly referring to birds, who leave the nest shortly after being hatched or born. The term is derived from Latin, nidus for “nest” and fugere meaning “to flee”.

Nestvlieders is an ode to metamorphosis. The project focuses on just that. The game of suggestion and imagination. The shifting of the shape in which the creatures are perceived. The imagination of the local community is a big factor in shaping the myth of the creatures. Monsters thrive well in our imagination, so we leave a big part of the creation to the audience. Just like myths, legends and folktales every person that sees or hears about it becomes an accomplice, a co-creator. How? By involving the public in the project in different ways.
