Hard to believe I made this image a year ago today. So much has changed since then, both for the better and the worse. @kristenwilkinsonphoyography and I drove up to Acadia with the intent of capturing the Milky Way over Otter Cliff- which we did later that evening, but we arrived in plenty of time for sunset so we decided to visit Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse. We could not have asked for better conditions. The tide was rolling in and it was windy, giving the waves some extra power. Clouds were moving through the area as well giving us a great sky to work with. I made my way down the rocks, as there are only a few places to stand to get the lighthouse in the shot, and then I waited for the waves to come. I timed this one just right as the sun illuminated the splash. I've shot this lighthouse many times but this is hands down my favorite shot of it. I'll be heading back to Acadia in June for a few days. Daily Waypoint | N 42° 39' 33.2" W 70° 36' 53.3" Rockport Harbor Motif #1—Motif Number 1, located on Bradley Wharf in the harbor town of Rockport, Massachusetts, is a replica of a former fishing shack well known to students of art and art history as "the most often-painted building in America." The original structure was built in 1840 and destroyed in the Blizzard of 1978, but an exact replica was constructed that same year. Built in the 1840s as Rockport was becoming home to a colony of artists and settlement of fishermen, the shack became a favorite subject of painters due to the composition and lighting of its location as well as being a symbol of New England maritime life. Painter Lester Hornby (1882–1956) is believed to be the first to call the shack "Motif Number 1," a reference to its being the favorite subject of the town's painters, and the name achieved general acceptance. Rockport is a seaside town in Essex County, Massachusetts.
