Does zeeby really drinks whats in the syringe? What if it was a disgusting medicine or even vitamins with awful taste? I've been trying to give my little Alice meds and it's always hard and stressful(for her and for me) to get it done, specially if it tastes really bad. If they really drink it then it must be a really nice option training them with the syringe
Yes and that’s why we’re doing this training! There’s currently yummy mango juice in the syringe, previously it was mashed sweet potato, we’re slowly working our way down to more fluid-like substances so in the instance where she would need to be medicated she would not fear the syringe and would willingly take the meds. In the instance that the meds can not be mixed with juices or baby food the positive reinforcement training will teach her to push through bad tastes for the yummy treats they get afterwards! Similarly to how you would be willing to eat dirt if someone payed you a thousand dollars, if trained with positive reinforcement with the correct level of motivation the bird will push through the bad experience so they can have the reward.
It’s all prep work in case of emergency situations, since you’re currently medicating your bird it would be very difficult to do it now, the bird already has poor experiences with the syringe likely involving restraint and bad tastes. You wouldn’t be able to stop medicating and use positive tastes and other methods since you need to be sticking with the medicating regime. What you can do is just make sure to give her plenty of treats afterwards and try to associate the syringe with more positive things outside of medicating, leave it near her (empty) during the day, put treats around it and so on just so when she sees it her first thought won’t be “I’m about to be restrained and have disgusting stuff jammed down my throat”.
It may pay to call your vet and ask if the meds can be mixed with baby foods like sweet potato or juices, (not all meds can) at least then it may not taste quite as bad to her and can make the experience a little more enjoyable!
