“Leaves are one of those ‘lost’ indie bands of the early noughties. An Icelandic band who, as Charles Spano in Allmusic.com so accurately writes “are to Sigur Ros as Coldplay is to Radiohead”. . They never made much ground beyond this, their debut album, released in 2002, but it’s a good album, akin to their contemporaries Doves, who incidentally are amongst their list of thanks in the sleeve notes. It’s well-crafted good old-fashioned indie epic rock, and they should have achieved wider airplay beyond their home country. The singer, Arnar Gudjonsson has a Richard Ashcroft twang in his voice and their sound palette is The Verve-Starsailor-Snow Patrol. . I Go Down is heavy on the atmospherics and my favourite. Catch is an upbeat rock song, with a chorus and intro that sounds a bit like Suede around their Coming Up album. Silence is a song Chris Martin would be proud of writing (back when he was better, circa A Rush Of Blood To The Head). Breathe genuinely sounds like a cover of a Coldplay ballad. These comparisons are all good things by the way, as long as you like generic indie rock. . I’ve not listened to it for many years, but really enjoyed reacquainting myself with it. They produced a couple of subsequent albums, but never matched the fame of their peers. Tis a shame. They’re well worth a listen and should be remembered as part of the rich offering of musical talent that Iceland has offered the world. Plus, you’ve gotta love a band who named themselves after a Nick Drake album.” .
