“Ifyou wait too long, he’s going to find someone else, you know?” An instantflush dusted across Ignis’s cheekbones as he took a rather long sip from hiscan of Ebony and Noctis watched him with crossed arms from the other side ofthe table. It was unlike Noctis to take any sort of initiative that didn’tbenefit him in some fashion, Ignis thought, and he wondered when he had becomeso cynical of the prince’s intentions. An unsettling feeling began taking rootin the pit of his stomach.
The ideaof being with another was foreign to Ignis. Not because he didn’t wish it forhimself. He thought very much that he might like to settle down someday withsomeone he cared for, but given his position and constant need to care for acertain lazy member of the royal family, the time for proper dating was simply nonexistent. He supposed, however, that Noctis was older now, able to care for himself alittle more. Perhaps his carefully crafted little bird was finally ready totake flight into the big, open world.
“Is that a challenge, Your Highness?” he questioned after amoment, the slightest tilt of a smirk tugging at the corner of his thin lips.Watching him over the rim of his glasses, he took note on how much Noctis hadactually grown up. His face still clung to traces of baby fat in his cheeks, but his jaw had defined itself much more prominently in the last year. In fact, there was more definition to him overall; his training sessions with Gladio hadstarted paying off in wondrous ways. Indeed, Noctis was no longer the young boythat has clung to his sleeves and relied on him to recall bedtimes stories. Thetime was soon upon him that Ignis would have to let go of the one thing thathad been holding him back – himself.
Noctis smiled genuinely, and Ignis faltered at the way hiseyes seemed to sparkle as he tilted his head, swirling his spoon and draggingthe silver across the rim with a faint scrape. When had he grown up so much? How much of his life had he missed despite being so engrossed in caring forhim?
“Prompto is a good catch,” Noctis replied slowly as the dullroll of thunder sounded overhead. Both men turned to watch out the window ofthe diner for a long moment, both contemplating. “But no, I’m not looking forcompetition.”
Ignis nodded, but eyed Noctis at length as he set his candown on the table.
“Not interested,” the prince bit quietly, and slow raindropsstarted to patter against the glass. “But, Nyx is.”
It took a moment to digest the new information, and Ignishad half a mind to question how Noctis had come to know such a thing, but he thoughtit best if he didn’t know the answer. After all, it was truly none of hisbusiness, though he wondered if that was something else that he should have noticed, too, but was previously too involved with keeping His Highness happy andstable.
“…You’re a good catch, too.”
Ignis’s lashes fluttered and he tried to conceal a softgasp, though not very well, at the compliment. It wasn’t every day that thePrince of Lucis simply offered up something nice to say to someone – not thatNoctis was mean by any stretch of the imagination, just that he had a tendencyto not get along well with words and feelings as a whole.
Despite Ignis’s heart skipping a beat or two, he managed alight, meaningful smile. He reached into his pocket for his wallet with theintent to pay for their drinks, but Noctis waved him off.
“I’ve got this,” he declared as he tossed a twenty-dollarcredit on the table, leaving Ignis with a stunned silence. “And don’t worryabout seeing me home. I’ve already arranged for Cor to meet me a couple blocksfrom here.” A glance filled with determination and independence flashed in theprince’s eyes, leaving Ignis gaping after him as he stood. He tried to callafter him, but his name seemed to die on his tongue with every attempt of asyllable until he disappeared around the corner and reappeared in the windowwith an umbrella Ignis had only just realized Noctis had stolen from him atsome point that morning.
Now alone, he was left to think. Was this what he wanted? Was his long-developing crush on the prince’s best friend something he trulywanted to pursue? His eyes stared deeply into the small hole atop his can ofEbony, hands clenching and unclenching the aluminum can.
A knock on the window beside him drew him out of histhoughts, and he idly thought maybe Noctis had forgotten something. Theinstinct to mother him surged up, and he as fully prepared to lecture him forbeing careless…except it wasn’t Noctis that warranted his attention.
A soft blond, covered by a giant, brightly colored umbrella, waved at him with a happy, although timid smile. Ignis blinked a few times, leaving Prompto guessing as he tilted his head, perhaps suddenly secondguessing himself as he awkwardly rolled his shoulders and hugged himself.Shaking his head, Ignis held up a finger, and Prompto nodded excitedly as hewaited for Ignis to crawl out of the booth and join him. A small frown formedon Prompto’s lips as Ignis exited the diner, probably at the realization thatIgnis had no protection from the rain, and ran to meet him.
“Thank you,” Ignis said with a smile, and he welcomed theexcuse to stand close to Prompto as they shared an umbrella. Their looks werealmost shy as they locked eyes, and ironic laughter bubbled from their lips asthey appreciated the irony of their situation.
“Going my way?” Prompto pointed over his shoulder, and Ignisnodded slowly, however, Ignis was in no hurry to relocate, and it seemed to himthat Prompto had a similar inclination. It was at that moment Noctis’s wordsrepeated themselves in the back of his mind, and Ignis took a long, deepbreath.
He should have asked, maybe, if it would be okay to kisshim. Hell, he probably should have given the kiss some sort of preface at all.Instead he acted, and he brushed a gloved thumb over the pout of Prompto’s lipsbefore sliding his palm to cup his cheek. The motion was fluid, and even ifPrompto wasn’t expecting it, he made no motion to stop him, or any otherindication that he wanted him to.
The kiss was chaste, sweet, and there was something cliché andplayful about it that struck Ignis in a way that gave him goosebumps. Promptotasted like what Ignis thought sunshine would be like if it had a flavor, andif that wasn’t enough to have him instantly addicted to his lips, the soft gaspand feel of his breath on his cheek as they parted was more than enough to keephim reigned in.
“…wow,” Prompto breathed, long lashes dancing along hisfreckles as he absorbed what had happened.
“Indeed,” he replied, and licked his lips, savoring the kissfor as long as he could. Nyx Ulric be damned. Ignis was going to keep PromptoArgentum all to himself if he had any say in it.
“You uh, think we could do that again?” Prompto’s lips wereso close that Ignis was almost kissing him again as it was, and for the firsttime in years, Ignis felt alive, all because of this boy. He would save himfrom the tediousness of daily routines, show him brighter aspects, and maybe, just maybe, Ignis could make it last forever.
