Dawnspecs: Well, this was an interesting predicament, to say the least.
Ayyyyyy! This is probably one of my faves I’ve written lately so I hope you like it as well!
Well, this was an interesting predicament to say the least.Of all the things Prompto had expected from this three-way relationship, hewished he had had the foresight to know that he would be indescribably jealousthe first time he found Ignis and Noctis alone together. If he were beingrational, it wasn’t all that bad – just dancing. That’s all it was. Therewasn’t any reason for him to be so upset. He knew from Noctis mentioning it inthe past that he and Ignis would occasionally use ballroom dancing as a trustand synchronization exercise. This was nothing but training for them.
And yet Prompto felt his hands tremble and his stomach lurchas he watched in secret from the double doors. He tried to convince himselfthat there was a good reason that the lights were dimmed, that Ignis’s handswere supposed to be that low on Noctis’s hips. Each step was flawless, so muchso that Prompto toyed with the idea that there was no way that could be thereal Noctis. There was so much grace and precision; every twirl and dipdeliberate.
The dancing, Prompto realized after a minute, wasn’t theissue, at least not entirely. He had to be somewhat reasonable – Noctis andIgnis had been doing this for years. It made sense that their bodies were usedto each other, that they would have natural chemistry, and for all Prompto knewit could help them in a battle if they ever needed it. But it wasn’t that thatgot him riled up and froze his eyes in place despite desperately screaming athimself to look away.
It was the subtleties that only someone who had been in themiddle of them in varying states of passion before would notice. It was the wayIgnis’s fingertips grazed the small of Noctis’s back in such a way that madehim arch. It was the way Noctis gasped as their lips came within a breath awayfrom one another and the struggle in his bones to not simply close the distancefor a lingering kiss. What stung the most, though, was the way they looked intoone another’s eyes as though they were the only people in the world and smiledas their chests heaved and fingers entwined.
The doors slammed shut behind Prompto and his feet carriedhim as fast as they could across the marble floors, narrowly dodging glaives, guards, and maids in his path. Several of them yelled after him to slow downand others gasped as the jumped out of his way, and although he felt a pang ofguilt of causing a scene in the Citadel, he would face the repercussions later. For now, he just wanted to get as far away from everything as he could.
He had made it through the front doors and down the stairsbefore he was stopped. Slender fingers caught his wrist and halted him andforced him around, and Prompto gasped when he came face-to-face with Ignis.Beads of sweat rolled down his neck and temple, and his glasses had slidhalfway down the bridge of his nose, but there was concern in his eyes.
“Whatever is the matter?” Ignis’s voice was soft and cleardespite having apparently chased him through the Citadel, and Prompto frowned, tugging on his hold. He didn’t want to have to explain himself.
Prompto whirled to find Noctis had somehow managed to getahead of him and he leaned on his knees, trying to catch his breath. He, too, sounded concerned, and once he took several long breaths, he righted himselfand closed the gap between them, his hand resting discreetly on his hip. Panicsurged through Prompto’s veins and he whipped his head from Noctis to Ignis, then back.
“I…” He began, but he couldn’t find the right words, and hecould feel the pressure of an expected answer rising. Again, his stomachlurched and he blinked his eyes, forcing himself not to cry. Besides, he shouldhave known that this was going to happen eventually. They were going to realizethat they were better off without him, and he would be alone again.
“Hey,” Noctis’s smile was calm, understanding, and he gavePrompto’s other hand a light squeeze. “It’s okay.”
“Let us find somewhere a bit more private,” Ignis said overhis shoulder, and Noctis nodded. After a moment of silence, so did Prompto, andhe let Noctis hold his hand as Ignis led them to a secluded near the secondgarden entrance. It was quiet, which Prompto appreciated. His head was alreadyloud enough without the added hustle and bustle that was the norm for Insomniaon a Wednesday night.
Noctis led him to sit on a short stone wall encasing a tallwillow tree and some pretty purple flowers that Prompto made a mental note toask about later before propping himself up on the dirt behind him. He gave himspace, but was still close enough that if Prompto had wanted, he could easilyfall back against him, and Ignis, after making sure they were hidden enoughfrom any eyes that might pry, kneeled in front of him, taking both of his handsin his.
“Now, would you care to explain what that was all about?”The tone of his voice made Prompto feel small, and he heard Noctis scoff behindhim.
“The hell, Specs? He didn’t do anything wrong. Don’t make itsound like he’s in trouble.”
“It’s okay,” Prompto interjected, and he squeezed Ignis’shands and indeed fall back into Noctis’s chest, allowing the prince to run hishands through his hair. “I saw the two of you dancing. I know I shouldn’t havegotten jealous, but I just…” Uncertainty bubbled within him and he released ashaky sigh. “You looked so happy together.”
“We are,” Ignis said quickly and affirmatively, and for asplit second Prompto thought that this was going to be it. Ignis was going totell him exactly what he had feared.
“But you make us happy, too,” Noctis added quietly,“and we all have our activities that we do without one or the other.”
Prompto nodded after a moment. It was true; he and Noctishad their video game nights, and there were nights where he and Ignis wouldcook together, so it was only fair that Noctis and Ignis had something thatthey shared together.
“I’m sorry,” he mumbled, suddenly feeling small and stupidfor being such a child.
“You have no reason to apologize, Prompto.” Ignis smiled andkissed his hands. “I’m personally flattered that you were jealous enough toreact so strongly. It shows us how much we mean to you.” A blush crept ontoPrompto’s cheeks and he tried adverting his gaze, but to no avail. Who was heto deny that he loved the both of them so wholly?
“And you mean the world to us, Prompto.” Noctis kissed hisforehead and wrapped his arms around his shoulders. “Besides, just say the wordand Specs would happily teach you how to dance. He thinks I’m an awfulpartner.”
“Come now, I never said that. I merely said you were an easypartner. It would be nice to feel another body that intimately.” Ignis smirked, and Prompto would have sworn he saw him wink as well.
“Most definitely,” the advisor assured, and he stood, pulling Prompto up with him and away from Noctis’s arms. Swiftly, Ignis dippedhim and caught him in a heated kiss that the blond found himself melting into. Withwhat rational though he had left he reached out for Noctis, who took jumpeddown from the wall and took his hand. When Ignis set him up right again,Prompto kissed their prince and wrapped himself in both of their arms.
Of all the things he had expected with this three-wayrelationship, Prompto hadn’t expected to fall so deeply in love that there wasno way for him to completely exist without one or the other.
