1. What inspired you to write the fic this way?
The inspiration for the fic came from me lying in bed and thinking one night. I was thinking over the show and I questioned whether Mary really would have not said anything. I was taking into consideration the restrictions society put on cross class romances, let alone one between a servant and the daughter of his employer. So then I thought, what if Mary did say something? The story was born from there.
2. What scene did you put down first?
The first scene in the first chapter. It’s a rarity, as I sometimes skip around depending on my writing muse or if the story changes as I write it.
5. What part was the hardest to write?
I haven’t posted it yet, but in chapter 5 I’ve written a letter in Sybil’s voice. I have difficulty writing letters in the voice of the character, so that was difficult.
13. What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? or if you didn't listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading?
I’m answering this for IHBI. I don’t really listen to the same music when I write. It really depends on my mood and what sort of inspiration I need. When I was writing Chapter 5 of In Her Best Interests, I did listen to a Sybil and Tom playlist I created. Some of the songs in the list are:
Fuck You performed by Lily Allen
Into the Mystic performed by The Swell Season
I’ll Be There sung by Hadley Fraser from the musical The Pirate Queen
If I Ever Leave This World Alive, Flogging Molly
The Story, Brandi Carlisle
Shanne Bradley, The Pogues
15. What did you learn from writing this fic?
I learned to challenge myself, to not write more than one multi-chapter fic at a time, and that research is important. I read Hundred Days: The Campaign That Ended World War I by Nick Lloyd for my reading challenge. However, it gave me great information on the end of World War I, which has effected the storyline.
