Shout-out to Ken for being a generally awesome person and teaching people about science, nature, and social injustice. One of the first people I met who helped emphasise the connections and interactions between science and society. He was one of the first blogs I followed when I joined tumblr, and his work at scinerds and wespeakfortheearth (where I now humbly assist) is always a blast to see.

He also introduced me to the greatness that is Carl Sagan, so thats important too.

A key pillar of the tumblr #science community. Keep doing what you do, Ken.

I just want to make it a point to say when I first started my science blog it was, in all honestly, solely thanks to how much I loved Ken's personal blog and the scinerds blogs, and how much passion he had for popularizing science which inspired me to blog no-holds-barred. As my blog, and time on tumblr grew, I got to know him more & more through his posts. He became even more of an inspiration to me because I realized he did not post about social issues and science exclusively, and as if the two never intertwined - which I tip my hat to because angry anons on this site try to make it really hard to not separate the two due to their own personal prejudiced agendas.

Ken is amazing for putting up with the continuous crap he gets from ignorant people on a daily basis and keeping it real in, and presumably outside of, tumblr. And even more amazing for inspiring people like me and other science bloggers to not shut up about issues that are just as important, and sometimes more important, than science itself. So thanks for being a legit human being and inspiring me and everyone else, and please never stop.

If you ever need anything, I've got your back, as well as all the other science bloggers who choose to not keep their mouths shut when it comes to issues "outside of science", and I hope you all know that. Keep those chins of yours up and never stop using those brilliant minds to educate those willing to listen, whether talking about science or social issues that clearly need addressing.

I think ikenbot (Ken) is my Tumblr hero.

Science cannot be divorced from social issues. Society dictates what is studied, learned, published, and furthermore recorded in history. Social issues divide the sciences and in a series of fields that depends on the pure pursuit of knowledge, which must balance the isolation of the practice with application to the real world, or what can be considered as the infinite set of human problems, there is a vital discussion to be had on how science embodies and absorbs the problems of society past and present.

I've seen little such intersectional (an improper word, really) dialogue, and to witness the backlash from "science fans" and popular science consumers to discussion of how social issues such as racism, sexism, colonialism, and heterosexism (etc) tie into the way modern science functions and the state of scientific literacy, is mind-blowing. And this person has not stepped down or apologized at all.

It's rough having lived apologizing for things you have never understood as not your fault. And as someone, especially a QWoC, on the brink of entering the world of scientific research, it is empowering to see someone speaking up for the causes that affect me in relation to my chosen life path, and furthermore on how this field affects and reacts to society.

A Long Overdue Appreciation Post!

Long story short, my current enthusiasm and love for science is tied to what some may call a spiritual journey.  For obvious reasons, I won't get into any details on that.  In any case, when I was still on the edge, there are two people on Tumblr that pulled me into the waters of the wonders of science.  I would not be swimming in these waters so passionately (if at all) if not for Ken and Jenny.  I remember reblogging them every now and then; soon thereafter those reblogs became a lot more frequent.  Ken gets swamped with messages so I would often message Jenny and tell her about my admiration for her blog.  Never mind that they're the reason I was acquainted with Carl Sagan and his work; for reasons, I heard little about him and I had no idea how incredible he was and still is as a communicator of science.  I couldn't think of a better way to thank them than to do so publicly.  I appreciate the heck out of them and I am grateful for the passion  and enthusiasm they share with others.  Thanks guys!
