Namish Taneja : Ikyawann
Just saw your post about Ikyawann! I followed it and even though it started out okay, it’s not a show that’ll make you invest in it. There’s not a lot of relationships that are looked at in depth and some of the performances aren’t all that. Also the main source of evil is just OTT. However, the female lead was the one strong point of the show. Even tho I didn’t watch it till the end, the last I remember is she wasn’t sulking over a break up or cussing herself over a failed relationship
Hi anon!
Thanks for the heads up on the show!
Like you said, “Even tho I didn’t watch it till the end, the last I remember is she wasn’t sulking over a break up or cussing herself over a failed relationship”
This part is very important.
In most shows a female character’s story is reduced to her love life and family. Even if she is shown as financially independent or having a job, that filters away eventually, or is mostly used as a plot point to show the struggles of a middle class girl. If we do have an ambitious female lead like Maya in Beyhadh, then its usually a negative/grey character. So, unfortunately we make our peace with whatever shows that there are.
But within this general framework of Tellywood, I appreciate when a female lead is shown to be moving on in life, and her entire existence is not defined by her love life. The fact that Ikyawann chose to show a female lead actually choosing her dreams over a potential love life, is a huge plus in Tellywood. More importantly because such female characters are usually depicted as negative or home breakers in Tellywood. So, even if the show is meh, for the makers to take the risk of showing a positive female lead doing all this is a good thing.
Of course, I can understand why Ikyawann didn’t get the numbers from TRP audience. :-/
So, I’ve never watched this show, Ikyawann, properly, but apparently in the finale episode the female lead decides to pursue her dreams (to participate in the Olympics) and chooses her ambition over love; while the male lead respectfully steps aside instead of emotionally blackmailing her or forcing his love on her.
Wow! A Star Plus show that actually separates the leads at the end for a logical and realistic reason, instead of a forced happy ending.
Gul ammi (and Ekta maiyaa) please take notes. Women can and do prioritize ambition and career over “love”. Most importantly, they possess enough self-respect to not go back to the douchebag male leads.
Also, a show can end in 150 episodes. Though it might not get TRPs. That is a different jhamela.
