Johnson spokesman Phil Bloomer told the Bloomington Pantagraph that Johnson now expects to seek reelection in the reconfigured 13th district, though he continued his strong criticism of the process that led to the new boundaries. “It’s not only unfortunate, it’s crazy, that they didn’t include any members of the delegation on the Republican side when they created the map. That’s not only a disservice to the congressman, but a disservice to the people he represents,” Bloomer said. Democrats expect to be competitive in the revised district against the six-term Johnson, who’s known for his maverick style and voting patterns in Congress. The last-minute deal left Shimkus with the more heavily Republican district that sprawls across the southern part of Illinois. It includes large parts of the current districts of both Shimkus and Johnson, and surrounds the district of Rep. Jerry Costello (D-Ill.) in the East St. Louis area along the Mississippi River.
