my significant other... she showed me samples of your writing on the i like homestuck blog, and, we have been going through those together and just being continually blown away! you really help expand our understanding and appreciation for a story that already means so much to us. what else can i say but: thank you mara!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You’re very welcome :D I’m glad you’re both enjoying.
I think I've figured out the active/passive Class pairs.
with help from ohthewhomanity and lackadaisicallexicon
Lord/Muse
Thief/Rogue
Prince/Bard
Mage/Seer
At least I think Mage/Seer is given. The rest have to meet the following constraints: three active/passive pairs, and the combination of the Alpha and Beta kids must produce four active players and four passive players. (Requiring each human session to be active/passive balanced by itself leads to paradoxes like Page having to be both active and passive.)
Here are my choices for the last three, with justifications for each.
Witch/Sylph: Word of God says that Jade is an active player, so Witch has to be active. Kanaya describes Sylphs as like witches but more magical, so it makes sense to me to pair them. I was a little iffy about making Sylph passive because of how active Aranea has become, but then I remembered that before she met Vriska, Aranea had spent thousands of sweeps doing nothing but talk.
Heir/Page: These Classes focus on making their Aspect available, Heirs to themselves, Pages to others. Page needs to be passive because their potential has to be unlocked by something or someone else (Aranea unlocks Jake, Vriska tries to unlock Tavros, and we don't know how Horuss was unlocked). Heirs can be active because an Heir embodies his Aspect. Becoming the embodiment of a concept is something you work toward, something you strive for, not something that just happens to you. Mituna made the effort to embody Doom and succeeded, based on his current mental state. Equius didn't act in a Voidy way and died before he could learn to use his powers. John is currently working on controlling the Breeze which sweeps him hither and yon, and he's figured out how to use it to blow away the dust from inside the game and how to return to a place he's already been in order to stop himself from changing canon. (Horuss, a Page, also actively worked on developing his powers, but Aranea tells us he didn't get anywhere with it. She blames his Aspect (Void); I think it was both the Void and the fact that Page abilities come when you least expect them. Horuss always expected them.)
Knight/Maid: We know that Knight is an active Class. This leaves Maid as its passive counterpart. Here's why that makes sense: Knights exploit or manipulate their Aspect (Dave with Time. We haven't seen Karkat or Latula do much with their Aspects, unless Latula uses Mind to make people believe her radgirl persona). Maids cause or allow their aspect to be exploited/manipulated. Porrim, in learning about the Scratch, allows Aranea to manipulate Space by implementing it (and gives Doc Scratch an in to create things like the green moon and the Condesce's empire). Aradia allows Time to be manipulated through the role she plays in creating Doc Scratch (she finds Cal at an impact site, setting the ectobiological process in motion). Jane allows Life to be manipulated through her connection to the Condesce, who uses Jane to create Gcat through ectobiology and force Roxy to try to make a new Matriorb.
These pairs give the Beta Kid session three active players and one passive (Rose); the Alpha Kid session gets three passive players and one active (Dirk). This wouldn't happen ordinarily, but the human sessions were made to be combined, producing a session with four active and four passive players. lackadaisicallexicon argued that each session had to be balanced separately for mythological reasons, but I think the mythology supports "made to be combined" for two reasons:
The Alpha session mythos relies on the "Heroes" coming from the Beta session
Since the Beta planets are now in the Alpha session, the Beta kids who haven't finished their personal myth-quests have the chance to do so in the Alpha universe.
So the two sessions are one session. I look forward to seeing what happens when the human sessions' Jacks Noir meet. (Not really. It's a scary thought.)
Anyway, here are my choices and motivation for them. I hope it all still makes sense to me in the morning.
