Through a very specific lense, the first Foreigner book is an evil hallmark movie.
An uptight, work-focused person (Bren) finds himself in a rural location largely disconnected from modern life (Malguri), more or less against his will. Over the course of the book, his perspective changes (valuing the natural world/history/understanding atevi better/etc), and he realizes he doesnt love his partner (Barb) anymore, if he ever did. The only difference is that, instead of the catalyst being him falling in love with a non-Barb person, its Ilisidi putting him through absolute hell.
Ilisidi watching a hallmark movie: "so, this is a human machimi?"
Bren: "yes, theyre very similar, at least"
Ilisidi: "well now I know why abducting, isolating, and torturing you worked so well"
Bren, starting to notice the similarities: ☹️
