American history fact:
After the Mexican-American war, there was a treaty signed. That treaty was called Treaty of Guadalupe Hildalgo also know as the Mexican Cession. Mexico had to give up present-day California, Nevada and Utah, along with parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. In exchange, America gave Mexico $15 million and promised to protect those Mexicans who were now living in the U.S.
Articles VIII and IX in the treaty say that Mexicans who now lived in the U.S. would ensure the safety of existing property rights. Those rights were never held by Americans and over time lands were taken.
