In Gray by Illls
One of the best albums of the year I think.
Mississippi musician sprinkles post-punk with beach sand on debut LP
did i tell you how much this ILLLS' album rules? the song "coma" might actually be perfect.
ACQUIRED: HIDEOUT FROM THE FEEDERS - ILLLS
The pursuit of originality has killed many new albums within the first seconds. For however far enticing press releases and captivating art direction can take you, it is easier now more than ever to write something off within the opening minute of pressing play. Sure, we're missing out on those hidden gems buried somewhere else in the album, but with current listening habits it is critical to introduce listeners to something with an identity immediately.
That is what Steven Ross, as ILLLS, did so well when "Out" made its rounds a few months back. With a seeping voice that recalls Perry Farrell (albeit a bit more steely), Ross clings his voice to tightly thumping drums and long strums of a mossy guitar. The track is an entity and its use as a lead single hinted at a collection of songs that comprised an album that knew exactly what it was.
Now, with Hideout From The Feeders released we can see the house that "Out" belongs in. The structure's strength lies in its sense of self. While it doesn't make bold claims at originality, it is proud to be what it is, allowing the subtle eccentricities to shine without calling attention to themselves.
A perfect example is the watery bass that opens things up on "Our Shadow". While it's tones bleed through other songs that particular isolation stands out and gives the album a familiar an interesting opening. Another moment stands out in "Coma" as Ross' voice softens to sing "We sleep together when I come here" as drums take a brief marchers pattern. Again, these are concise veers from the charcoal sludge we slosh on Hideout, making them all the more refreshing when exposed.
Through the chorus of "Sitting Around" Ross tightens his vocals in an ominous delivery from the top of the throat. It's a complete parallel from the lethargic words he smears across the crunched strums throughout the rest of the song. If Hideout From The Feeders is a house "In Gray" is its most comfortable room. Furnished with a gorgeous hook, "In Gray" is dense with observation and ghostly accents.
Hideout From The Feeders is a coherent album that bares Steven Ross' confidence in setting a mood. His voice is thin but sure and it is easy to see these songs coming to life in a particularly immersive experience.
Hideout From The Feeders is out now via Aloe Music and through ILLLS bandcamp, both available by way of the red sentences.
from the full-length Hideout from the Feeders, out November 12 from Aloe Music.
