Daunting. The only word I can use to describe this frenzy. It looks that good on the TV that you would do anything to be there, between all the glitz and the glam and the super hot guys and wonderful, empowering women. Until you actually step out into it all. My palms are super sweaty, I’ve got to stop wiping them on my dress every four to six steps we take. I don’t know where to look or how I look at this stage but I keep getting commended on how great I look and how we look by all these people I like to think I know.
Shawn, obviously being the natural sparks up conversations left, right and centre with anyone and everyone. Feeling extremely uncomfortable and lost as soon as I loose his touch. I don’t think I have ever felt so self-conscious in my life but at the same time I have this huge adrenaline rush. He is getting so many complements and well wishes on his artistry and nomination I can’t help but feel proud. Seeing him in an element of his own, he has common dreams with majority of the people here and it’s now I see how much this means to him. My heart swells.
I now realise how me being here, is actually quite a big deal for Shawn and everything he said in the car was probably petrifying for him to admit but it was to make me feel better but I completely over looked his fears of being here too. That his name, his reputation is very much on the line tonight with his performance and nomination and here I am being selfish and worrying about myself. With that, I am going to embrace the wonderful motto “Fake it till you make it”.
After greeting a few people at the immediate entrance, Shawn graces some fans as I stand back and watch how happy he makes these people. Of course, I have seen him in his intermit VIP sound checks that he allows fans an exclusive look and all the back stage passes, even his concerts in general but this is something bigger. These fans have braced the cold, miserable weather to come and see their idols.
Shawn parts way with the fans who always scream for more, which for me would be the hardest thing. Next we have the media wall, as I like to call it. The media wall is where you walk and stand against the sponsor’s sheet as a million and one cameras snap you and every gesture you make. You are only somewhat free when reaching the end. Letting Shawn go in on his own, he tries to bring me into them but they don’t want me so I wave him off. Closer to the end a big man, taller then Shawn, tells me I have to join him for the last few ends. I don’t even know if I manage a nod before I am being directed across into Shawn’s comforting embrace.
“See, so far so good” He whispers into my ear as he wraps an arm around my waist pulling me close for the photos.
Coming to terms that I can, in fact, pull this off I bring my A game to the interviews and at the right time my confidence is peaking. Guiding us into the line, the large men tell us that we have roughly 1-3 minutes at each flagged person that wanted to talk to us. And yes, they wanted us. We got through about two interviews and the questions were pretty standard, nothing to out of the ordinary or weird but still I was smitten for Shawn as with every answer my heart felt ready to burst.
Heading over to E! News, I was expecting some hard hitting questions because of who they were. The exclusive kind of questions and I’m not sure how ready I was for this.
First he starts of asking him how he deals with the fame, how does he wrap his head around and if he is a different person off camera then he is on. Knowing the answer, Shawn replies by saying the easiest way to not get caught up in it is be yourself so you don’t have to be worried you’ll get caught out. Then he goes into the typical, do you feel like the industry ages you? Talks about his success, which I love hear Shawn talk about, but then BOOM. Out of nowhere,
“Would you ever date a fan?” To say that I was shocked was an understatement but I should have seen it coming. People don’t care whether you are in a relationship, unless your married or engaged, they just ask the question all their fans want to hear
Shawn squeezes me tight, “Of course I would, I mean my girlfriend here” He looks down to me with a huge smile on his face, “Is my biggest fan. I don’t think there are any rules to that, right?” I feel his thumb start to stroke my hip as I lean into him and I believe in that moment we were both put at ease.
Not the answer the interviewer was expecting, he laughs it off and says that we would just scream for a day or two as Shawn brushes it off saying after that everything would be fine but quickly changes the subject to Snapchat and John Mayer. Then we’re off to the next one. Most of the questions and compliments are the same, which Shawn tends to answer the same but nobody really notices and if they do they don’t seem to care.
Finishing up with a few more fans and chatting with other artists and bands, Shawn soon leads me into the Theater. We find our seats easily even though it is quickly becoming full. Shawn reaches for my hand and I notice his leg is bouncing. It hasn’t even started yet but I bet this has been in his head the whole time.
