Complacency

You spend most of your hours together. Every morning, you awake feeling the warmth radiating from his body on your right side. You roll over to lay by his side, moving gently so as not to wake him, gazing up and studying his face. The way his lips curl up into the slightest smile, the birthmark on his neck, the annoying way that his eyebrows are always better than yours even though he doesn't even notice. You rest your head over his shoulder, watching his chest rise and fall, a steady heartbeat drumming underneath you, soothing you back to sleep. A gentle kiss on the top of your head, his hand tracing patterns on your back. In his arms you feel so small and fragile, but you always feel protected, you know he would never harm you. Sitting at home of an evening, playing a game of poker and watching his hazel eyes move and dilate. In the car, belting out our favourite songs and watching him sing them with so much effort and passion. You crawl into bed, talk shit to each other while you take off your makeup. He reminds you that you look beautiful, running a hand through your hair before you lie down, facing him. He kisses you on the top of your head, then resting his forehead against yours and looking into your eyes, exchanging "I love you," turning off the light and rolling back with him to lie your head on his shoulder. The same as every other night, fitting two puzzle pieces together. Complacency is a curse that comes when you forget to appreciate the little things.
