Some information about Pluto! 

I’m creating these little explainers about some cool space and science things that I enjoy knowing about, stay tuned for more as I do them! I have a degree in illustration and a cheerful interest in science. My sources for this one are a podcast I listen to called Houston, We Have A Podcast, and the Nasa website page on Pluto. The understanding is all mine though, so forgive any errors.

Like most people I have a special place in my heart for Pluto, the best damn Dwarf Planet out there. I asked my housemate what he knows about Pluto and his answer was; “Not much, really.” He then paused, thought for a moment, and said; “Ï think my Aunty's bed has bed bugs.” So that’s really not a lot of general knowledge. If you would like to know a little bit more about Pluto than my housemate, read on!

Do you know what Pluto looks like? I did a high quality, realistic portrait of Pluto this year, so it’s a good example of how she looks, if slightly romanticised in colour and emotion. So now you know what Pluto looks like! It’s cute, it has a nice little heart on it.

Only one satellite has ever been to Pluto. New Horizons launched in 2006 and reached Pluto in 2015. At the time of launch we knew bugger all about Pluto, we knew about Charon, the biggest moon, and two of the four smaller moons. Along the way they discovered the other two moons which causes a lot of concern about hitting space dust and wrecking the satellite before it even got to Pluto. What followed was essentially a game of dodgems with some serious lag time.

Pluto is a little girl, a very small creature, and its biggest moon is huge in comparison. Charon is about half the size of Pluto and as such Pluto does not spin in a perfect rotation, it in fact is tugged towards Charon wherever Charon is, the two of them spinning around a common central point that exists off centre inside Pluto

Charon and Pluto are also tidally locked! In the way that our moon always has one face pointing towards us (no human had seen the dark side of the moon until 1959) Pluto and Charon are tidally locked with each other, constantly gazing across space into the other’s eyes. Cos they’re definitely in love
