Marriage Equality Shouldn't Even Be An Issue
The primary reason there's an uproar of controversy about gay and lesbian marriage is ignorance. That's a very bold statement for me to make, especially seeing as how I've been raised, and maintained my faith, as a Christian. I can only speak for myself, but in any case, faithless or devout, the question of disallowing and allowing marriage seems simple, if you know what you believe in.
The issue here is that most people don't know what they believe in. The movement for equality is gaining popularity internationally; however, in this case, I'm speaking subjectively about the United States of America.
Why should marriage be only between a man and a woman?
"Becuz god sez so. He made it liek dat, so we cant change that." (<- Typical conservative response. )
Oh really? So, it's okay to disobey your god when he says divorce isn't allowed? Is it okay to disobey when he says not to work on Sunday?
If I recall, God said not to judge because that's his job. (Matthew 7:1)
So, it must be okay to sinfully disobey if it means you get to ruin someone's life for being born differently, according to most conservative and old-fashioned attitudes toward the whole pride movement.
The whole 'God hates fags' things is the archetype of religous ignorance and bigotry. It's plain wrong. It's more insulting to God himself than to the homosexuals it attains to target. God never said he hated gay people (or cigarettes.)
If I recall correctly, all sin is equal, and once you've committed one sin, you've committed every sin in the book. So, everyone's in the same boat in that sense.
A story we hear often pertaining to the contending argument is the classic Sodom and Gommorah tale from the Old Testament in the bible. I understand that there was a lot of raunchy, sinful abominations; no question there, but that's not due to the fact that homosexuality exists.
Those are two separate occurrences.
There are far more wicked people who are heterosexual than the alternatives.
One idea more people should bring themselves to accept is that there are no gay, lesbian or straight people, only gay, lesbian and straight actions.
Some people simply are adapted to one type over the other.
So, with that said, consider all people equal. Sexuality, race, intelligence, background, ethics, morals are what make us individuals.
As a species, we are the same.
Being straight is as much a choice as being gay/lesbian.
Another point I'd strongly like to emphasize is that not all people are Christian. Those people are not subject to the bible's laws, according to the bible itself. People have free will, which allows them to choose what kind of life they want to live.
Jesus teaches to practice your beliefs in private (Matthew 6), which entails not publicly condemning anyone else's choices. No one should know that you feel a certain way unless they want your opinion.
The United States was never a Christian nation. No founding father ever claimed anything of the kind. What was claimed was a freedom to believe in any ideologies you so choose. Some of which have nothing against homosexuality. Free speech is supposed to give you the right to voice your opinion, not to be a hateful shrewd and tell others how to live.
Marriage equality is inevitable, whether by passive compromise, or fighting for what is right tooth and nail, and what's right, is minding your own damn business.
What will happen if gays are allowed to get married?
Nothing. Nothing will happen to you unless your gay/lesbian, which in that case would only benefit you.
As for myself and other straight people, nothing will change. Life will be exactly the same.
Gay/lesbian people haven't done anything, as a group, to deserve infamy.
If you're a Christian, there are bad people and there are bad people who are saved.
If you're not Christian, there are people; good, bad and indifferent.
In either case, the Christians are the bad people. (Only kidding.)
It's not about the sanctity of marriage; otherwise, divorce would be just as condemned.
The truth is that you may or may not like it, but it's here and it's not the sole cause for the destruction of anything. It's not going to affect you, and you have too much time on your hands if you're actively protesting anything prevalent to anti-civil rights.
