okay so i’m making a bf playlist and i just realized so many of the songs have religious undertones (mostly catholic) but i SWEAR IM NOT A NUN. most of them reference religion in a questioning and almost fearful way, think of it more like catholic guilt than actual fanatism. despite being an atheist my entire life, i can actually say that after years of catholic education (my parents sent me to catholic school despite being atheists, don’t ask why) i’ve internalized some of the teachings and practices to the point where when i feel like i’ve done something wrong i start praying despite not even believing in a god. anyways, i just wanted to ask you if you think religion or faith plays a part in any of the bf characters’ lives; do you they turn to faith during troubled times? is the religion they grew up with the source of their shames? do you think some of them might even have religious trauma? akshakau i know that these are kind of hard questions but i wanted to hear your thoughts on this, sorry for dumping this on you
love, trans eiji anon
OOHHHH. this is a very good question to ponder, and frankly one i’m not too well equipped to answer. for one: eiji (and ibe) would most likely have grown up following shinto traditions, which are heavily tied to japanese culture and which i definitely don’t know enough about to speak with much certainty as to their impact on him as a character. i can make conjectures, based on what ive read, but i don’t think i can say much definitively!
i WILL say that here is a place where i kind of do have thoughts on ash and shorter! religion in america is Weird and Funky. from wikipedia i can see massachusetts is ~50% catholic, which for ash would In Theory fit that jim’s of irish descent. however idk if jim would care enough about that to take his kids to a catholic church or not, so its possible ash and griff went to protestant services. i doubt they skipped entirely, bc in my experience growing up in a small v christian american town, people Talk if you don’t go to church.
that said. i think bluebeard killed any faith ash may have had. and if any survived that ordeal, dino certainly stamped it out.
which makes that part in ep23 all the more interesting - it’s the one time we see ash ever pray, iirc. and he does it for eiji. i see this at least as less of actual belief in god, and more of desperation: if this will help, ash will beg a faceless figure that’s never saved him before in his life, that let him get hurt over and over and over. this may be flavored by my own strange brand of religious trauma, but i really don’t think i can see ash having any sort of positive relationship with religion - i don’t think it’d be possible for him to reconcile everything he’s had to go through with the idea that there’s a force that COULD have intervened, but DIDNT, for whatever reason. beyond that, i also think that he wouldn’t like the idea of some larger, all powerful being that can control him, or overpower him, or whatever. i don’t think ash trusts authority nearly enough for that to be a positive relationship.
this is getting long and i still have thoughts. i will cut myself off on ash here, but re: shorter i did wanna mention that i think its like, super common, at least among a LOT of the 1st gen americans (kids of immigrants) from non-christian cultures, its super easy to just. no religion. nah. not for any particularly grand reasons, but because you grow up at home with everyone at school being majority christian and then you go home and your parents and your extended family overseas and everyone else is very much Not Christian (for me, im mixed, and one side is hindu and the other is muslim), so culturally speaking, youre just kind of in the middle. and for me, and my cousins at least, and several other 1st gen kids i know, that made us kind of just ambivalent to the entire thing. i think that thats probably common among shorter and his gang, too, though idk!! maybe in big cities it’s easier for 1st gen kids to have a sense of cultural identity than in small towns.
