Just thinking about some of the weird twists and turns my work has taken over the past year(ish). I never really know what I’m doing, guys. Somehow I wound up presently making work about the feeling I used to get when I would wander into parts of West Coast Video where I wasn’t supposed to be, and the surreptitious glances I would cast towards all the scandalous titles. It was an exciting time. . I’m submitting this work for @ilysm.jpg’s consideration for a small grant - they are so, so generously offering support for artists who are experiencing financial turmoil due to COVID-19. It’s really fantastic to see that so many organizations are offering resources for artists, and are thereby acknowledging that art is essential. How do you talk about memory? It becomes a part of you, sinking into your bones, occupying rooms in your mind and body, splintering into a thousand fragments and alternately strengthening and degrading our foundation. It haunts and heals, both spectral and transformational. You can view my MFA thesis exhibition Whispers from the Ghost House at symanthajones.com. (Link in bio.) Whispers from the Ghost House is about memory, both general and specific. It is a memoir, an exploration of personal history and how it effects something as mutable as memory. I construct homes and homelike spaces to capture the memories that spontaneously arise as spectral projections on present reality, in other words, I create haunted homes.
