THE SHADOWS OF THE FOREST SNAKED across the uneven ground under them, and in the brief blinks of sunlight that broke through the canopy overhead, they seemed to slither underfoot. there was a unsettling quiet to the thick woods, like a beast in its slumber, the rise and fall of it’s chest only audible as the wind rustled through the leaves. aklla found a comfort in the stillness, as if the world had come to a stop on its tilted axis. it was easy to forget that the journey before them would be one of life and death when it made for such a peaceful reprieve. it hadn’t always been like this. many decades ago, it had in fact, been a peaceful haven that she frequented. she remembered considering making shelter in the comfort of the trees. before they had become a shield for a bloody war.
her palm pressed against the rough bark of a tree and she squinted at the fog in the distance. both time and distance became hard to make out in the quelled. she fished in her bag for her digital map, screen illuminating her face in the dark. it was never a good sign when her brows knit together, ❝ you’re still alive, right ? ❞ she addressed evie without looking back at her, as if an afterthought in a solo journey. there’s no hint of concern in her tone, despite the inevitable peril she’d thrown them both in. not that evie would know that just yet; just a walk in the park. her question is a matter of assessment, if evie was in any way physically compromised, they would have to stop. there wouldn’t be time for a breather any further into the forest. she roughly tosses a metal bottle to the girl, paying no mind to where she aimed. ❝ drink, it’s not water. ❞ with no other explanation she finally turned her relatively undivided attention to her. a cruel grin curled up her lips, ❝ wish I could tell you the journeys worth the end goal, but I don’t like lying. ❞
