“You like the beach?” Noah asked, leaning against the locker next to mine. His easy demeanour reminded me yet again of how little we had in common.
“Of course, who doesn’t like the beach?“
Noah let out a small laugh, “No, I’m implying that that’s where we are going later.” I looked at him sceptically through my lashes, holding back my reply. “You know you want to go,” he sang.
“I guess we’ll have to see,” I teased. “I think I hear a book calling out my name,”
“Come on, Scar, it’ll be fun”
“What did you just call me?” I questioned with a laugh.
“It’s cute, no?” Noah asked, studying my likely incredulous expression. “Alright, Scarlet it is,” he conceded.
I shook my head, reaching into my locker and grabbing my calculus textbook. Noah smoothly picked it out of my hands, moving to carry it leisurely against his hip.
“Excuse me, but I need to get to my locker.” A girl said from behind him. He turned, shooting a flirtatious smile at Vivaan, a girl I recognized from my physics class. He side stepped out of her way. The arrogance of the manoeuvre baffled me. It was clear that he was aware that all the girls in school loved him, and obviously not afraid of using it to his advantage. Vivaan thanked him quickly, blushing as she rushed away. Once she was out of ear shot, I turned towards him.
“Girls in this school really do love you,” I remarked, raising my eyebrows.
“But not you, right?,” he asked with a laugh and winking at me as he did. I felt my eyes roll with a small smile spayed across my lips. His obvious flirting used to irritate me, seeing him flirt with any girl who stood in front of him. My stubbornness would buck up, preventing me from enjoying his attention, but his cockiness was starting to get on my nerves a little less than normal. Ignoring his question, I twirled around dismissively to begin walking to class. Leaving Noah unfazed and following at my heels.
When we reached the intersection leading over to my class, Noah turned to me, leaning in much too close, pushing the cool material of the textbook into my hands, with his fingers slightly wrapping around mine. He paused by my ear. “See you in the courtyard after school, Scarlet,” he said, making my decision for me. Then, he turned, heading towards the school entrance.
“Aren’t you going to class?” I called after him.
He turned back to me and smirked, “Me? Nah, I’m going back home. Who needs class anyway?” His grin widened as he raised two fingers in salut, and turned to leave.
