Noah untangled his legs from the railing and shifted backwards so that his back was to mine. Slowly, he stretched himself out on the ground so that all he could see was the sky. Thinking that this was better than staring out towards the see i laid back so that our heads were side by side. “So you know my fear. Whats yours?” I inquired, wanting to delve deeper into Noah’s personality. “I dont have any.” He replied, stretching his arm out and cupping his hand under his head.
"Bullshit. Everyone has a fear. A fear for a fear.“ I felt a laugh start to bubble up from my core. How ridiculous was this conversation, and with Noah Asher? "I guess if I had to have a fear it would be being alone. No matter what I do I always am with someone. Right after school im usually with friends, and when Im done hanging with them im with different friends, and then im doing something with my grandparents. Im always around people.’ "See, I cant do that. I like to go home and chill on my own. Curl up with a good book."Noah leaned up on his arm and gave me a look at my response. “That’s sad.” “It is not!” “But… it is. I’m gonna change that,” he decided. “You’ll do no such thing!” I felt myself feeling a bit flustered. Embarrassed. Who was this guy to tell me how to live my life. Or judge it for a matter of fact. My face contorted and my cheeks flared up “Oh come on scarlet. I’m not judging you. I’m just gonna teach you how to live a little and not let it pass by in an instant. It’ll be fun, I promise.” Noah winked and grinned at me “Why are you looking at me like that?” I huffed. “You’re just cute when annoyed.” I rolled my eyes. In what universe would someone want to be cute when angry. “Do you need to get home soon?” Noah asked still perched up on his elbows as if sensing that every fiber of my being was itching to get back to my comfort zone. “I think so. I have some stuff I gotta do.” “Okay. I’ll tell the crew and we can walk ya home.” Noah stood up and started walking over to the entrance leading back to my safe haven, the solid ground. He stilled with his hand on the door knob. “Would you want to do this another time? I know I seem like a jerk and all but I did enjoy hanging out with you.” “You’re no- “You can save your lies, love. I can see it in your eye rolls.” He replied. Winking at last and turning to leave this death trap.

I was going to die. The fear was ricocheting through my body, bouncing off every nerve ending as if it was a pin ball. Before I could think about what I was doing, I was on my hands and knees, the shaking throughout my body putting me more on edge. I was unable to move my head to look around, only the splintering paint of the ground was in my field of tunneling vision. A velvety laugh pierced through my fear, causing me to loosen up a fraction, and be able to move my head around to see where it was coming from. Noah was doubled over, laughing at my discomfort and fear. "Can't handle heights?" He sat down on the floor, a few feet away from the railing and reached a hand out to comfort me. I slowly inched forward, not lifting my hands or knees off of the floor. This was the only thing keeping me slightly grounded and I was not about to loose that. "The views pretty," He stated, when I didn't answer back Noah turned towards me. I was gnawing at my bottom lip, my brows furrowed making a dent in my forehead. "You really are afraid, aren't you?" All I could do was nod my head, I didn't have it in me to speak yet. Noah's expression turned from humour to seriousness. "Sorry I shouldn't have laughed. It's obvious this terrifies you," He apologized. "I never understood why people were so afraid of heights. Or let their fears bottle them up. I would never let that happen. If anything it gets me pumping. Makes me feel like I'm giving a giant F you to the world, not letting their obstacles it throws in my way from stopping me. I watched in half amazement half utter horror as Noah edge over to the railing and stuck his feet through so that they were dangling at the side of the lighthouse. "You're nuts." I finally spoke, a breathy laugh escaping. Complete awe filled me up, at how Noah was so comfortable and confident to be able to get over his fears. "Nuts about you," He winked. Without realizing it, I was suddenly less fearfull then I was a moment ago. Noah's usual flirting and efforts calmed me, mainly because it was a major distraction to the height I was at right in this moment. ✧ ✧ ✧
Noah leads our walk down the beach, the lighthouse growing in size as we get closer. His long legs make it difficult to keep up. Surprising considering that it was my pace people usually struggled to match. I do my best to make it seem like I’m not having trouble, but the way Noah glances out of the side of his eye leads me to believe that he’s not buying it. Our walk is blanketed with an awkward silence. Instead of struggling for words, I let the silence hang there, looking out towards the ocean. The sun's light reflects off of the surface, and it’s lovely. It makes me wish Lea was here to capture the moment with her paints. "Do you surf?" Noah asks interrupting my thoughts, and jutting his chin out towards the water. "Do I look like I surf?" I ask, seeing the corners of his mouth tip up in a ghost of a smile. "Don't answer that," I grimace, earning me a full on grin. "I like to surf. My gramps taught me when I was little. The waves here suck though... I want to move down south soon, where they’re better, not so harsh and frigid. Maybe buy my own apartment." Noah kicks sand up as he walks, dirtying the toe of his converse. I raise my eyebrow. "Don't you have to graduate before you do all that?" "I'd have to go to class first in order to do that." He waggles his eyebrows at me. I never understood that, how people could feel so comfortable not going to class. I could feel my palms getting clammy just thinking about it, how my grades would suffer if I did, how I wouldn't be able to get the marks I wanted. Somehow, Noah doesn’t care about all that. The lighthouse is suddenly right in view, looming over us at its full 271 feet. I feel my throat close up, considering how far up it is from the ground. "Where are we going?" I squeak, already knowing the answer deep in my gut. "Up." is his only reply as he sticks his pointer finger into the air, a mischievous dazzle in his eyes. I feel my toes curl up in my shoes, my nerves screaming at me, warning me to turn around. "I don't think that's a good idea." "It’s a great idea, Scarlet. Come on, live a little.” Noah cut straight across the remaining beach separating us from the lighthouse, flinging open the unlocked door to make his ascent up towards the lookout. I gulp back as much fear as I can, feeling a need to follow him, to prove myself. ✧ ✧ ✧
“You like the beach?” Noah asked, leaning against the locker next to mine. His easy demeanour reminded me yet again of how little we had in common.
“Of course, who doesn’t like the beach?“
Noah let out a small laugh, “No, I’m implying that that’s where we are going later.” I looked at him sceptically through my lashes, holding back my reply. “You know you want to go,” he sang.
“I guess we’ll have to see,” I teased. “I think I hear a book calling out my name,”
“Come on, Scar, it’ll be fun”
“What did you just call me?” I questioned with a laugh.
“It’s cute, no?” Noah asked, studying my likely incredulous expression. “Alright, Scarlet it is,” he conceded.
I shook my head, reaching into my locker and grabbing my calculus textbook. Noah smoothly picked it out of my hands, moving to carry it leisurely against his hip.
“Excuse me, but I need to get to my locker.” A girl said from behind him. He turned, shooting a flirtatious smile at Vivaan, a girl I recognized from my physics class. He side stepped out of her way. The arrogance of the manoeuvre baffled me. It was clear that he was aware that all the girls in school loved him, and obviously not afraid of using it to his advantage. Vivaan thanked him quickly, blushing as she rushed away. Once she was out of ear shot, I turned towards him.
“Girls in this school really do love you,” I remarked, raising my eyebrows.
“But not you, right?,” he asked with a laugh and winking at me as he did. I felt my eyes roll with a small smile spayed across my lips. His obvious flirting used to irritate me, seeing him flirt with any girl who stood in front of him. My stubbornness would buck up, preventing me from enjoying his attention, but his cockiness was starting to get on my nerves a little less than normal. Ignoring his question, I twirled around dismissively to begin walking to class. Leaving Noah unfazed and following at my heels.
When we reached the intersection leading over to my class, Noah turned to me, leaning in much too close, pushing the cool material of the textbook into my hands, with his fingers slightly wrapping around mine. He paused by my ear. “See you in the courtyard after school, Scarlet,” he said, making my decision for me. Then, he turned, heading towards the school entrance.
“Aren’t you going to class?” I called after him.
He turned back to me and smirked, “Me? Nah, I’m going back home. Who needs class anyway?” His grin widened as he raised two fingers in salut, and turned to leave.
