I'm so glad you brought up Norman's tendency to puff himself up to look bigger. I noticed after a few viewings of Psycho that Tony did it once or twice, so I was super impressed and happy when I saw Freddie incorporate it into his Norman, too. I think his insecurity about his lack of stereotypical masculinity is a big part of his character. Also, it's interesting that they gave him a brother who's almost hyper masculine. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Norman hates Dylan for that reason.

Yes! Yes, this so much. He tries to act all intimidating when he talks to Sam Loomis — he stands straighter, his voice gets tight, his jaw clenches, his fingers tap — and in Bates Motel, whenever Norman is interacting with Romero or Shelby or Ford, he does pretty much the same thing. (Except when he went to the police station to report Ford hanging around Miss Watson’s grave, but that’s different. He was trying to come off as innocent, since Romero suspected him of being involved.)

And his deep dislike of Dylan— I agree that it does stem from his own lack of typical masculinity as well. Dylan is the cool kid Norman wishes he could be. Dylan drinks and smokes and has a cool, dangerous job, and has that air of mystery that attracts girls. Norman attracts girls too, but he’d much rather be like Dylan, honestly. Even if he often thinks Dylan acts too rashly or is too disrespectful, he envies Dylan’s masculine traits and wishes he was more like that.
