New Apple peripherals took up the cover of this issue. A number of articles looked at word processing, with Maggie Canon's editorial enthusing on the subject (although not every computer magazine editor was quite as positive...) Deeper inside the magazine, there was a positive look at the SwyftCard, an expansion card for the Apple II that offered speedy text searching and editing among other things. Jef Raskin, famous among at least a few for having begun an Apple project code-named "Macintosh," intended the card to be a tangible prototype of his own ideas of what an "easy-to-use computer" would really be, as opposed to the laden-down-with-software machine Steve Jobs had turned his project into after shoving him out of the way. There was an ad for the SwyftCard near the back of the magazine (some distance from the article) offering a positive comment from Steve Wozniak.

If you wanted to dabble in “desktop publishing” using an Apple computer, this issue pointed out you didn’t need a Macintosh for that. It also switched inside from a sans-serif Helvetica typeface to something resembling the “Garamond Narrow” in official Apple ads and documents.

Macworld January 1986

Even an Apple-branded external hard drive, dot matrix printer, and external modem might seem a bit of a stretch to shape an issue’s cover around, but the Hard Disk 20 was notable for introducing the Hierarchical File System and actual subdirectories instead of “folders” that merely looked like them to the Finder alone, catching up to MS-DOS and the Apple II’s ProDOS. There was an article about Macs being used on location to help produce the book “A Day in the Life of Japan,” following up on a Lisa having been used for an earlier book in the series. David Bunnell’s editorial might have been seen as responding to proclamations that the technologically superior Commodore Amiga was about to cut the Macintosh loose from its branch, but might also be seen as amounting to casual comments that colour wasn’t really that important in a business environment, and Commodore would likely be bankrupt inside the year anyway.
