Things We Love: Summer Reading Programs!
School is out for the summer, but that does not mean its time for kids to stop reading books for a few months. Its important to feed a love for reading year round, and summer reading programs do just that! Many libraries in towns and cities have fantastic programs that encourage children to read through activities and contests.
Even more, Barnes & Noble has a great nation wide summer program that rewards children, grades 1-6, for reading. Imagination’s Destination runs from May 21st to September 3rd. Children can earn a free book by simply reading 8 of their own books, filling out the B&N Reading Journal, and turning it in to any Barnes & Noble store! Not only is Barnes & Noble inspiring kids to read more, they are fueling the love of reading by giving books as prizes. I (Sabrina) can remember doing this exact reading program when I was a kid!
So, when school is out and the book programs run during the academic year are over (Like Pizza Hut’s BOOK IT! Program - Please tell me someone else remembers doing that program as a kid??), look into what summer reading programs are going on in your area. There are plenty of ways to feed one’s book need during the summer months, and keep up a year-round love for reading!
