Power
The bedroom is full of a dull amber glow from the lamp in the corner, relaxing you and Dan as you lie in bed, your index finger trailing up and down his spine. He's awfully quiet tonight; something seems to be on his mind, and you're determined to find out exactly what it is.
"Dan?" you ask quietly, your voice breaking the peaceful silence of the room. Dan looks over to you, his eyes red and puffy. Your eyebrows furrow in confusion, and concern diffuses through you. "What's wrong? Why are you upset?"
"I just... I have a lot of things on my mind," he mumbles, his voice clearly deceiving him. Dan's never really been a brilliant liar.
You reach for his hand, rubbing your thumb along his knuckles as some sort of support. "You can tell me if you want. Or not. It’s your choice."
Dan inhales deeply, taking a moment to collect himself. He closes his eyes, and breathes back out. "I'm thinking about my ex-girlfriend. She... she was controlling. Emotionally manipulative. Emotionally abusive," he says, opening his eyes again. The simple act tugs at your heartstrings, even more so at the tears crowding his eyes.
There's a short silence, just for a moment, as Dan once again collects himself, before he continues. "I don't know why I let her do it to me... I thought it was normal for her -- you know, it was just how she is. I could take it easily then, but I told her, you know, I wouldn't fall to my knees for some simplicity around there. I wouldn't let her get to me like that. When I realized what was going on, I was in too deep and couldn't figure out how to get out of the hole."
Words escape you, and Dan's name seems to be the only thing you can say. Late night confessions had never really become this deep before -- not even with your friends during your teenage years.
"I just don't understand why I let her have the power that she had over me. She always used it against me -- and I don't even know if she was aware that she was doing it or not. I let her have it for too long, though, and that was my own fault. I was stupid to let her have it that long, to allow her to carry on." His long fingers run through his thick, dark hair. In moments like these, it feels as though actions truly do speak louder than words, which you seem to be losing by the moment. How do you respond when secrets like these come out?
Once again, your heart pangs uncomfortably with guilt, with sorry, even with remorse. This was only at the end of last year -- if you had known then, you could have been able to help him. You could have stopped this for him... "She did this to you? Your ex-girlfriend? Oh, Dan... I'm so, so sorry."
Dan just shakes his head. "It's not your fault. I guess... I guess you hurt the ones you love so easily because they're so trusting of you. When she hurt me, she really, really hurt me." He turns and looks at you, placing a hand lovingly on your cheek. "When you came along... the light and the end of the tunnel really was there. I'd still be with her if it wasn't for you."
Tears fill your own eyes this time, "Dan... I'm so sorry. I wish I had known," you admit, a tear escaping your eye. "I feel so guilty. I wish I could have done something for you."
"My love, you've done more than enough. Even without realizing. I love you, and things are getting better. Things are so much better, and I can't thank you enough for it."
