Prologue
Four Years Before the Wedding
It started with a spilled cocktail.
Not the metaphorical kind ━ the messy tangle of emotions or the bitter aftertaste of a love gone wrong. No. It was literal. A highball glass of something too pink and expensive, sloshed across the sleeve of Natalie's favourite silk dress at a rooftop bar in New York, the night before graduation.
Natalie didn't even want to go to the bar. It was her idea of living hell, but her manipulative shrew of a friend decided that the night before graduation would be the right moment to push her boundaries. Natalie would've preferred staying at the apartment where she could do a puzzle or practice her violin, and it wasn't as if her roommate was going to come back.
Ah, yes. Her stunningly beautiful roommate Bang Chan, who despite being two years older than her was still graduating at the same time. He lived more of the party life than she did. Natalie was the typical geeky, science girl who only wanted to please her parents, even if she wasn't going into the sciene field, her violin skills could take her anywhere whilst Chan changed his major every other week before settling on Music (something that wound Natalie right up, seriously who plays an electric guitar at 5 in the morning).
Other than that Natalie couldn't really complain about him much. He was out so much that she didn't see much of him. That didn't mean that she wouldn't make extra meals for him.
Natalie Kim stood frozen, empty glass dangling from her fingers, wrist lifted, watching the sticky liquid spread like watercolours across the champagne fabric of her dress. A slow, silent disaster.
''I'm so sorry,'' a voice said. Low. Male. Steady but sheepish, ''I was trying shake a cocktail. Turns out I'm not quite the bartender I think I am.''
The voice was familar to Natalie. Of course, the one night she chose not to stay in, her roommate would turn up in the same place. She could tell he had, had a bit too much to drink already but it was the night before graduation so Natalie couldn't really complain, ''It's fine Chan. Don't worry, it's an old dress and I can wash this out.''
She offered him one of her signature smiles, ''are you sure Nat?'' Natalie couldn't help but to chuckle at him, ''I'm sure, nothing a little homemade strain remover can't fix. That red wine stain on your shirt won't be able to wait. If you don't wash it out now, you might as well just get rid of it.
Chan hurriedly pulled Natalie behind him to an empty sofa, ''you've got to help me Nat, please I'll do anything.'' Again she couldn't help but let out a laugh at his childish behaviour, ''I will you manchild. I'm also getting you a bucket because you look pale and the last thing I need is to be cleaning up sick as well as some mysterious pink cocktail out of my favourite dress.''
''You're the best Nat!'' He shouted as the younger woman rushed off behind the bar. From her position she could see her friend (yes the manipulative shrew) coddled up with her fiance. It wasn't as if Natalie cared anymore. She knew it was inevitable, and she had a severly drunk roommate to be caring for.
Although she didn't care, Natalie couldn't stop the tears from falling down he cheek, ''there you are! I was wonder where you...Oh, what's wrong Sunshine?'' Chan asked as Natalie ducked in front of him quickly running a vinegar soaked sponge of his shirt. One of his hands found the top of head and began drunkenly stroking her hair, ''my fiance and my best friend, see them over there.''
He turned to see where she had nodded, ''you poor baby. Do you want a hug?'' Chan held his arms wide open for her. Natalie shook her head at him, ''quit moving will you. I can't get your shirt if you keep moving.''
''Nat, do you have a pen?'' Natalie was shocked when she had a napkin waved in her face. She smiled a she pulled a pen from her bag, ''why, planning more cocktails?''
''No, this is my favour to you. Whenever you need a plus one to an event, just ring this number.''
''What why would I... Do you know what, okay. I'm going to need a date to their wedding. So, deal?''
''Deal.''
And so became the cocktail clause.
