(written at 6:40AM local time on September 17, 2014)
I'm at the airport right now for my ridiculously early flight. I have about an hour until we start boarding so I'm going to crank out this post about my day at IMATA yesterday while jamming out to Jordin Sparks.
-
At 10:00AM I went to my first presentations of the day, the IMATA Behavior Presentations (my favorite of the three types):
Above, Below, and Beyond: Training South American Sea Lions for Open Ocean Interactive Program
The Last of the Leopard Seals: A History of the Captive Management and Training of Taronga Zoo's Leopard Seals
Starting a Water Based Training Programme with Adult Female Patagonian Sea Lions at Colchester Zoo, UK
Meeting in the Middle
There was an IMATA Business Meeting at 11:45PM directly following the presentations, but it took up the entire lunch block and was mostly meant for people who actually work in the industry already, so I skipped that to eat some leftovers in my room with Elise and Kyrrahaf.
At 1:00PM there was a really exciting presentation by Michael Scarpuzzi of SeaWorld:
A Comparison Review of the Northern & Southern Resident Wild Orca to the SeaWorld Orca
Right after that presentation, the IMATA Behavior Presentations started at 2:00PM.
Working with 0.5 Asian Small-Clawed Otters in a Free Contact Setting (Cat's presentation!)
A Sea Lion Rides on a False Killer Whale - Training Multispecies Cooperative Behavior
There were two more presentations after those two, but we got really hungry so we went to the hotel's restaurant for some more food. At 3:30PM we went and saved ourselves seats for the next set of presentations which started at 4:00PM: The IMATA Education Presentations.
An Exploration of the Superstitious Behaviors of Animal Trainers
An Orca And A Tiger: Comparing Two Case Studies With a Decade of Data
Dolphinaris: Dolphin Trainer Boot Camp
Effectiveness of Dolphin-Assisted Therapy among Veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
This was probably my favorite set of presentations overall, because all 4 of them were really interesting and engaging. Most of the other sections had a mix of really engaging and funny presentations with more serious and scientific data-type presentations.
Following that (at 5:30PM) was a poster reception in the exhibit hall, which we checked out for about 45 minutes. We talked to some of the poster presenters and ate some free food (popcorn and soft pretzels). Then we went back to the IMATA room again to save our seats for the 7:00PM Informal Pesentations. However the doors were still closed, so Kyrrahaf and I talked to some of the presenters from the last block, who were outside the doors at the "Meet the Speaker" table.
At 6:45 they opened the doors and we went in. This was also a dessert social so we got free cookies, cupcakes, brownies, and ice cream bars. The informal presentations were as follows:
Update on the Beluga Whale Project by Georgia Aquarium
White Whale Mascot Expo 2012 Yeosu: The First Introduction on Korea, Basic Biological Research, and Physiological Research.
Minimally Invasive Surgery - Trust and Relationship
Care of a Neonate Grey Seal at Smithsonian's National Zoological Park
Investigating the Effects of Applied Learning Principles on the "Create" Response in Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins
Analysis of Pinniped Behavior Before and After Cataract Surgery
Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin Responses to an Artificial Stimulus: Impacts of Novelty and Demographic Variation
What a Difference Differentiation Makes: Patty, the Picky Sea Lion
These presentations went on until about 9:30PM, at which point they switched over to the live auction. It was mostly expensive trips and dolphin swims, but the very first item was a painting by Beethoven (the beluga), which sold for only $45. I was expecting there to be more, but there weren't and now I really wish I had bid on his painting, I would definitely pay $45 for that!
After the auction, I said goodbye (for real this time) to Kyrrahaf and Elise and I went back to the room. We both had to get up early for our flights so we went to bed pretty soon after that, and that was the end of our conference! Next year's conference is in the Bahamas, and if I don't have a job by then I'm going to try to go!
